School Board Seeks Applicants for Vacancy

The Northshore School District Board of Directors invites community members to apply for the vacancy created by the resignation of Ken Smith.

Smith resigned from his District 2 position on the School Board effective April 6. State law calls for the remaining School Board members to appoint a replacement within 90 calendar days of the resignation.

The appointed board member will serve until the regularly scheduled Nov. 7 School Board election. Applicants for the interim appointment may choose to also run for election for the two years remaining on Mr. Smith’s term, or may choose not to run for election and only serve until November 2017.

Applications are due to the district office by 4:30 p.m. on May 12. An executive session of the board to discuss applicant qualifications is scheduled for May 16. The board intends to conduct interviews of one or more candidates in an open public session on Monday, May 22, 4 p.m., in the Administrative Center Board Room. Please note that this is a change of date from the May 24 and 25 dates originally posted.

The Northshore School Board consists of five members elected to serve, without compensation, for overlapping terms of four years each. Board members represent the district at large, although they must reside in specific geographical areas of the district.

Interested applicants for Ken Smith’s position must reside in Director District No. 2 which includes Kenmore and the areas farthest west within the school district. The director district area map is available on the district website or verified by contacting the King County Elections office.
