Diversity Discussion Invitation:
Northshore School District parents and guardians are invited to a special discussion on how to talk with children about race and diversity. The event is offered as part of Northshore’s Equity and Diversity Initiative that launched in 2015. This year, the number of languages families speak at home in the district has grown to 94.
Ilsa Govan, co-founder of Cultures Connecting, will lead the interactive session with parents and staff from 7-9 p.m., Monday, March 20, in the Skyview Junior High School commons. The event, “Fostering A Diverse and Inclusive Environment,” is free. Interpreters are available by calling Communications at 425-408-7670. Govan, co-author of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Strategies for Facilitating Conversations on Race,” has led conversations about racial equity at workshops and conferences across the country.
Participants will walk away with practical tips on:
Talking about race and ethnicity with children
Identifying our own unconscious biases
Helping students connect with other cultures
Creating a welcoming community for all
