HiCap Elementary Math

Students who qualify for highly capable math services may receive those services via a math rotation, walk-to model, or online program with support from an NSD teacher. Students who receive highly capable service in math receive instruction above grade level. Past experience has shown that students who qualify for highly capable services in math generally are able to grasp concepts quickly. If your child has recently qualified for highly capable math services and needs extra support on pre-requisite skills, some families find it helpful to explore some of the content below:

For Families of Incoming 2nd Grade HiCap Students

Major Topics covered in Third Grade Math Expressions include, but are not limited to:

  • Introduction of multiplication and division (math facts and basic understanding of the process)
  • Addition and subtraction and subtraction with regrouping
  • Measurement and Data
  • Geometry
  • Introduction to Fractions
  • Problem Solving- including one and two-step problems and use of variables

Please note that skills that are missing or need reinforcement automaticity with addition and subtraction facts to 18, telling time to the hour and half hour and knowing coin value amounts.

3rd 4th Grade Math Expressions (Click for overview for families)

For Families of Incoming 3rd Grade HiCap Students (who will be new to HiCap)

Major Topics covered in Third Grade Math Expressions include, but are not limited to:

  • Introduction of multiplication and division (math facts and basic understanding of the process)
  • Addition and subtraction and subtraction with regrouping
  • Measurement and Data
  • Geometry
  • Introduction to Fractions
  • Problem Solving- including one and two-step problems and use of variables

It is highly recommended that students practice these concepts over the summer and have fluency in basic multiplication and division facts which will result in a more successful transition.

4th Pre-Algebra 1: Decimals & Fractions, Ratios, Rates & Statistics, Introductory Algebra, Rational Numbers and Equations(Click for overview for families)

For Families of Incoming 4th Grade HiCap Students (who will be new to HiCap)

Major Topics covered in fourth and fifth Grade Core Focus include, but are not limited to:

  • Multi digit multiplication and division practices 
  • Measurement and Data
  • Geometry
  • Fractions - addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Problem Solving- including one and two-step problems and use of variables

It is highly recommended that students practice these concepts over the summer and have fluency in basic multiplication and division facts which will result in a more successful transition.

5th Pre-Algebra 2 Core Focus:  Proportions & Probability, Linear Equations, Shapes & Angles, Geometry(Click for overview for families)

For Families of Incoming 5th Grade HiCap Students (who will be new to HiCap)

Major Topics covered in fifth Grade Math Expressions and sixth grade Core Focus include, but are not limited to:

  • Multi digit multiplication and division practices with integers
  • Measurement and Data
  • Geometry
  • Fractions - addition and subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Decimals - multiplication and division
  • Introduction to algebra 
  • Problem Solving- including one and two-step problems and use of variables

It is highly recommended that students practice these concepts over the summer and have fluency in basic multiplication and division facts which will result in a more successful transition.
