Screening
What is screening?
During screening, the Highly Capable Department will review recently-collected data we have on file for your student. In some cases, we may administer the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT3) or the Naglieri General Abilities Test in order to collect additional information about your student's potential eligibility for Highly Capable services. Students who have met the screening criteria for their grade and have parent/guardian permission to participate in testing will move on to assessment.
Our Instruments page has additional information on the sources of data for the Highly Capable Eligibility Process: Instruments.
How do students move to assessment?
- If your student is new to Northshore (enrolling prior to Mid-October), our department will administer the Naglieri Screener. Their Screener will be reviewed alongside academic achievement data (for example, their fall i-Ready score and/or their Smarter Balanced Assessments).
- If your student is currently receiving Highly Capable Services in either reading or math, they are already eligible to participate in assessment. Because of this, they will not participate in screening.
- For all other grades, refer to the section below.
Kindergarten
Families, teachers and others may refer a student in kindergarten to be placed on a Holistic Learner watch list for potential highly capable characteristics. The kindergarten referral process will consist of a data review using data we already collect.
