Exiting the Program
District Initiated
The district MST reviews student performance data each Spring, considers appropriateness of student placement, and plans for transition of services based on the student needs. The MST determines whether or not a student's needs are best met with highly capable programs services based on assessment data and classroom performance.
When an exit from the program is considered, the School Guidance Team convenes a meeting to review the student's profile in order to determine if an exit from the Highly Capable program should be recommended to the district Multidisciplinary Selection Team (MST).
Parent Initiated
Parents may choose to exit their student from the program temporarily or permanently. If you are interested in information regarding exiting your child from the Highly Capable Program, please contact us at hicap@nsd.org.
The following form is provided for parents who wish to exit their child out of participation in Highly Capable services for which they are qualified. By completing this form, you are indicating that you do wish your child to receive accelerated instruction designed for students who have been granted highly capable designation/s.
Exiting services means your child will not receive accelerated services in that content area, and if they rejoin the program later, they may face additional challenges in adjusting to the curriculum.
Please consider your decision carefully and consult with all concerned parties before making your choice. If you exit your child out of services for two or more school years, they will no longer retain their Highly Capable designation in that content area/s. If, after exiting out of services for two years, you want your child to receive Highly Capable services again, you would need to refer them for screening and/or assessment testing. This process would determine if they should be granted the Highly Capable designation once more.
