In 2011, Washington formally adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. These learning standards were developed through collaborative, public processes led by curriculum committees in Washington state, by collaborative coalitions of multiple states, and by national organizations and curriculum associations. The new standards will help students better understand and solve real-world problems, getting them ready for college and career opportunities.
Northshore School District began the process of gradually transitioning to the Common Core State Standards in 2011. Mathematics courses have phased in the Common Core State Standards over the past three years, and all math courses will be fully aligned to the Common Core in 2014-2015. Grades 6-8 will continue to use math curriculum from Holt. Students in Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 will continue to use curriculum from Prentice-Hall.
English language arts (ELA) adopted new curriculum aligned to the CCSS. Grades 7-9 piloted new curriculum in 2013-2014 and have chosen to implement Springboard beginning in 2014-2015. Grades 10-12 piloted new curriculum aligned to the Common Core in 2014-2015.
