Dear Northshore Community:

This last weekend, I had the opportunity to travel back to Charleston, South Carolina where I grew up. It was great to be back with my large extended family to celebrate my nephew’s high school graduation. After the ceremony, we all got together to wish Joseph well, eat, and catch up. As I looked around the room I was reminded of all the opportunities education has provided my family. I have shared before that my dad, raised in the deep segregated south, didn’t have the opportunity to finish high school and go on to college. I am so fortunate that my parents prioritized education for me and my siblings, and in turn changed the trajectory of our entire family for generations to come. I know personally the power of a great education, and I am committed to making sure our Northshore students receive the same opportunities.

Beginning this evening, Northshore will also celebrate our 2024 graduates and all that they have accomplished, their bright futures, their families and our committed staff that have supported them along the way. At my nephew’s graduation party, we were each asked to share a word of encouragement or advice. I will share the same thoughts with our graduates that I shared with Joseph, my nephew - don’t ever limit yourself and don’t be afraid to change course. Take full advantage of every opportunity provided to you along your path. Learning, growing, and changing is part of life’s journey. I am so proud of you and all that you have already accomplished and I cannot wait to see what you do next.

The full list of Northshore graduations can be found on the District website. I hope to see and celebrate with many of you over these next two weeks.

I also want to take this opportunity to recognize the Northshore Council PTSA and school PTAs who have supported our families, students, and staff over this last school year. From education advocacy, to schools’ cultural celebrations, to staff appreciation luncheons, our PTAs and dedicated volunteers are instrumental in supporting excellence in our schools. Last Friday was the Northshore Council PTSA’s Spring Recognition Event. Congratulations to all the award winners, including the Northshore Council PTSA for being awarded the 2023-24 Outstanding Council of the Year by Washington State PTA! The Washington State PTA President was in attendance to recognize the Council and celebrate along with all of the PTA members. A full list of school-based award recipients can be found on the Northshore Council website and summary of Council awards can be found below in the Connections Newsletter.

Finally, earlier today we hosted a 2024-25 Budget Development Board Study Session. Throughout this challenging process, staff and the School Board have been committed to transparency. District staff presented the final 2024-25 budget recommendations during the session. Interested staff, families, and students can watch the Study Session presentation archived on our YouTube channel

To learn more about the 2024-25 Budget Development process visit the district’s budget webpage or the School Board’s State Funding webpage to find out about advocacy efforts underway and how to get involved.

I hope that these last few weeks of school are joyful for you, your family, and all of our students. As a reminder, the last day of school is June 25 for Kindergarten through 11th grade students.

In partnership,

Michael Tolley

Superintendent

Summer School Opportunities through Northshore

Summer can be a wonderful time for high school students to catch up, get ahead, or be exposed to new content areas through Northshore Summer School. All classes will take place virtually July 8-August 8, and enrollment is on a first come, first served basis with the tuition information available online. Space is limited in Accelerated Pre-Algebra 1, Accelerated Pre-Algebra 2, Accelerated Algebra 1, and Drawing and Design. Registration for these accelerated or first-time credit courses will close on June 15. Registration for credit retrieval classes closes on June 28. Learn more on the Summer School website

Summer Technology Device Update

Northshore students in grades 2-11 will be keeping their assigned computing devices over the summer to provide continuous learning opportunities. Students will bring their device back to school in the Fall, taking their device with them if transitioning to a new school in the district. Read on for more details about what this means if you need help or are leaving Northshore or visit our summer technology device website for information.

  • All students will be expected to care for their devices over the summer in the same way they did during the school year. Always contact Family Tech Support if you have issues with the device: 425-408-7631 or make a help ticket at http://go.nsd.org/studenttechhelp.

  • Families who wish to use a personal device over the summer or do not want a device will notify the school by completing this opt-out form so that we can ensure that the device is collected and returned to inventory.

  • Students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 will not take their devices home unless Families request to do so by completing this form no later than June 14: http://go.nsd.org/techoptin

  • Students who are withdrawing from Northshore schools will be required to return their assigned devices to their school in June or August. Families departing in July will need to return the device and accessories to the District.

Student Device Protection Program – Summer Info

Families who purchased the Device Protection Program plan during the 2023-24 school year have coverage for their student device from the date purchased through Sept. 6, 2024 to allow families time to report damage sustained during summer when schools are closed. Any family who has not already purchased but would like to have coverage in place for the summer is able to purchase a plan online using TouchBase until August 1. Beginning on Aug. 15, 2024, families will be able to purchase the DPP plan for coverage beginning on Sept. 3, 2024 and continuing for the 2024-25 school year.

As a reminder, the Device Protection Plan program covers the device (Chromebook, Macbook, or iPad) loaned to your student against accidental damage for the school year. This program does NOT cover damage resulting from misuse or loss of the device. The standard payment to enroll in the Student Device Protection Plan is $25 per year; free for students who have qualified for free or reduced-price meals and who have provided consent to share their status for fee waivers. Learn more about the program on our website.

Have You Heard About SUN Bucks Summer Food Benefits for Families?

alt_text

Children in your household may be eligible for a new program called Summer EBT/SUN Bucks if your household income is less than 185% of the Federal level. Participating families will receive $120 for each eligible child on a card that they can use to buy food during the summer at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other authorized retailers.

If your family has already applied for free and reduced-price meals at school, you automatically qualify for SUN Bucks and will receive a card in the mail. If you think your children are eligible, please apply for free and reduced-price meals, which qualifies you for SUN Bucks, by filling out a simple application either online or you can download the form. Be sure to apply by June 21 in order to get benefits for this summer. If you need assistance filling out an application, or if you have questions, contact Food and Nutrition Services

In addition, some community locations are participating in USDA’s Summer Meals program, which is open to all children regardless of family income. Search for locations on the USDA website.

2022 Bond Update: Playground Improvements During Summer 2024

alt_text
Installation will begin during summer 2024 for two schools receiving fully inclusive playground structures, funded by the 2022 Capital Bond, which was generously approved by Northshore voters. Draft renderings of the improvements coming to Frank Love Elementary and Hollywood Hill Elementary are available, including “fly-through” videos created by the contractor. At both schools, the areas will be fenced off and unavailable to the community during construction beginning after June 25. We expect the installation will take all summer and possibly into the start of next school year. While we hope it will be complete prior to the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, we are developing plans for alternative playground activities, as construction timelines can be delayed due to a number of factors. Please visit the project updates for Frank Love Elementary and Hollywood Hill Elementary to see the video and images for each project.

Gun Safety

Northshore School District recognizes that the dangers of gun violence are significant, which we were reminded of after the heartbreaking loss of life at Garfield High School in Seattle last week. The importance of speaking openly about this sometimes-controversial topic and the value of discussing preventative measures is vital to the safety and security of our students, schools, and the broader community. We all share a role in the safety of our children and community. The District’s Safety and Security Department has compiled resources, including tips for talking with young people about firearm safety, resources to support the safe storage of firearms, and more.

Water Safety

As we round the corner to warmer weather, please remember that our lakes and rivers are still dangerously cold. Even if the top few inches of water feel warm to the touch, know that everything below that can take your breath away. King County has experienced a rise in preventable drowning fatalities since 2019, with preliminary data showing 30 deaths in 2023. Many of these deaths could have been avoided with life jacket use and supervision. It’s crucial to prioritize water safety to protect our children.

The following information provides guidance and local retailer discounts so that everyone can have fun in the water and STAY SAFE: Seattle Children’s life jacket tips and couponlearn to choose the right life jacket, and find more resources.

Racial & Educational Justice

Pride Month

June is Pride month. Northshore is unapologetic in our commitment to creating inclusive, welcoming, and safe learning and work environments and Pride is another opportunity to affirm our values. The Racial and Educational Justice Department helps guide this essential work by providing supportive resources. For a number of years, REJ has published Pride resources on their webpage.

Juneteenth

Juneteenth is an annual observance that commemorates the ending of chattel slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved African Americans were freed in the state of Texas. This was the last state to adhere to the Proclamation, and a local Freedom Day celebration the next year has since turned into an annual day of observance in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Today, Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom, independence, advancements, and culture; yet we must also recognize that although there have been many strides forward, the deep struggle for Black liberation still remains. In observance of Juneteenth, the District will be closed on Wednesday, June 19. The Northshore School District values each member of our community and is committed to building a better now and a better future, together.
