Class of 2024: Celebrating Graduates
During the next two weeks, the Northshore School District will celebrate the brilliance, creativity, and hard work of our Class of 2024 during nine high school and program graduations. Our community is proud of what you have accomplished and eager to see what comes next for you! Most ceremonies require tickets but will also be live streamed on our website and YouTube for family and friends who cannot attend in person. Visit the graduation website for schedules and links.
C.P. & Dorothy Johnson Humanitarian Awards Presented
In late May, Northshore celebrated 71 outstanding students from preschool to grades 12+ for consistently demonstrating the value and dignity of others, treating others with respect, and promoting the common good. The C.P. and Dorothy Johnson Humanitarian Award recipients were selected based on three criteria: acceptance, community, and advocacy. The annual recognition program highlights the varying ways in which our students are making a difference in their school communities and our communities as a whole. The ceremony and information about each award recipient are available on our C.P. and Dorothy Johnson Humanitarian Awards website.

Ruby Bridges Elementary Teacher Recognized
Congratulations to Ruby Bridges Elementary kindergarten teacher Kim Broomer for being selected as the 2024 Teacher of the Year representing the Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD), which works with early learning and K-12 public and private schools from King and Pierce counties. This is a significant honor, and we are very proud to have Kim as part of our Northshore community. As Ruby Bridges Principal Cathi Davis shared, "this is no surprise to our community, to me or to the hundreds of people who have visited her classroom to learn how inclusive education honors and elevates the brilliance of each and every student." Summer School Opportunities through Northshore
Summer can be a wonderful time for high school students to catch up, get ahead, or be exposed to new content areas through Northshore Summer School. All classes will take place virtually July 8-August 8, and enrollment is on a first come, first served basis with the tuition information available online. Space is limited in Accelerated Pre-Algebra 1, Accelerated Pre-Algebra 2, Accelerated Algebra 1, and Drawing and Design. Registration for these accelerated or first-time credit courses will close on June 15. Registration for credit retrieval classes closes on June 28. Learn more on the Summer School website.
Summer Technology Device Update
Northshore students in grades 2-11 will be keeping their assigned computing devices over the summer to provide continuous learning opportunities. Students will bring their device back to school in the Fall, taking their device with them if transitioning to a new school in the district. Read on for more details about what this means if you need help or are leaving Northshore or visit our summer technology device website for information.
-
All students will be expected to care for their devices over the summer in the same way they did during the school year. Always contact Family Tech Support if you have issues with the device: 425-408-7631 or make a help ticket at http://go.nsd.org/studenttechhelp.
-
Families who wish to use a personal device over the summer or do not want a device will notify the school by completing this opt-out form so that we can ensure that the device is collected and returned to inventory.
-
Students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 will not take their devices home unless Families request to do so by completing this form no later than June 14: http://go.nsd.org/techoptin.
-
Students who are withdrawing from Northshore schools will be required to return their assigned devices to their school in June or August. Families departing in July will need to return the device and accessories to the District.
Student Device Protection Program – Summer Info
Families who purchased the Device Protection Program plan during the 2023-24 school year have coverage for their student device from the date purchased through Sept. 6, 2024 to allow families time to report damage sustained during summer when schools are closed. Any family who has not already purchased but would like to have coverage in place for the summer is able to purchase a plan online using TouchBase until August 1. Beginning on Aug. 15, 2024, families will be able to purchase the DPP plan for coverage beginning on Sept. 3, 2024 and continuing for the 2024-25 school year.
As a reminder, the Device Protection Plan program covers the device (Chromebook, Macbook, or iPad) loaned to your student against accidental damage for the school year. This program does NOT cover damage resulting from misuse or loss of the device. The standard payment to enroll in the Student Device Protection Plan is $25 per year; free for students who have qualified for free or reduced-price meals and who have provided consent to share their status for fee waivers. Learn more about the program on our website.
Have You Heard About SUN Bucks Summer Food Benefits for Families?
Children in your household may be eligible for a new program called Summer EBT/SUN Bucks if your household income is less than 185% of the Federal level. Participating families will receive $120 for each eligible child on a card that they can use to buy food during the summer at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other authorized retailers.
If your family has already applied for free and reduced-price meals at school, you automatically qualify for SUN Bucks and will receive a card in the mail. If you think your children are eligible, please apply for free and reduced-price meals, which qualifies you for SUN Bucks, by filling out a simple application either online or you can download the form. Be sure to apply by June 21 in order to get benefits for this summer. If you need assistance filling out an application, or if you have questions, contact Food and Nutrition Services.
In addition, some community locations are participating in USDA’s Summer Meals program, which is open to all children regardless of family income. Search for locations on the USDA website.
2022 Bond Update: Playground Improvements During Summer 2024
Installation will begin during summer 2024 for two schools receiving fully inclusive playground structures, funded by the 2022 Capital Bond, which was generously approved by Northshore voters. Draft renderings of the improvements coming to Frank Love Elementary and Hollywood Hill Elementary are available, including “fly-through” videos created by the contractor. At both schools, the areas will be fenced off and unavailable to the community during construction beginning after June 25. We expect the installation will take all summer and possibly into the start of next school year. While we hope it will be complete prior to the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, we are developing plans for alternative playground activities, as construction timelines can be delayed due to a number of factors. Please visit the project updates for Frank Love Elementary and Hollywood Hill Elementary to see the video and images for each project.
Gun Safety
Northshore School District recognizes that the dangers of gun violence are significant, which we were reminded of after the heartbreaking loss of life at Garfield High School in Seattle last week. The importance of speaking openly about this sometimes-controversial topic and the value of discussing preventative measures is vital to the safety and security of our students, schools, and the broader community. We all share a role in the safety of our children and community. The District’s Safety and Security Department has compiled resources, including tips for talking with young people about firearm safety, resources to support the safe storage of firearms, and more.
Water Safety
As we round the corner to warmer weather, please remember that our lakes and rivers are still dangerously cold. Even if the top few inches of water feel warm to the touch, know that everything below that can take your breath away. King County has experienced a rise in preventable drowning fatalities since 2019, with preliminary data showing 30 deaths in 2023. Many of these deaths could have been avoided with life jacket use and supervision. It’s crucial to prioritize water safety to protect our children.
The following information provides guidance and local retailer discounts so that everyone can have fun in the water and STAY SAFE: Seattle Children’s life jacket tips and coupon, learn to choose the right life jacket, and find more resources.
