Dear Northshore Community: The 2024-25 school year is just around the corner. I hope our students, families, and staff have had a wonderful summer so far. During summer months, work has continued to prepare for an exceptional school year. On July 8 we passed our 2024-25 School Year Budget. I want to take a moment to again recognize how challenging this last year was for all of us as we developed this school year’s budget; and thank you for your partnership, trust, and support. While we are not done - most of the budget reductions are complete. In partnership with our School Board, I will continue to advocate for our students, our staff, and families to the state legislature - we all deserve better and need our state to fully fund the cost of educating our children.

In July I visited our summer programs at Canyon Creek Elementary School (Special Education Extended School Year and Summer Recovery Services, and the Elementary Summer Academy) and engaged with our students and dedicated staff. Thank you to our staff for helping ensure our students were able to continue their learning through the summer months - it will make all the difference this coming year for many of these students.

This summer I had the opportunity to witness the power of our community when many individuals came together in support of our students and families. In just a few short weeks, the Northshore Family Engagement and Resource Center raised just over $30,000 to provide summer meals to Northshore students in need. Our own students  also helped raise funds. Nile4You, a NSD student non-profit, hosted tennis lessons and provided tutoring for a small fee. The proceeds were given back to the District to support the meal program. You can see the photo of their first donation above. Working together with six faith and cultural community organizations, food was bought in bulk and the Northshore Schools Foundation served as the fiscal sponsor. Hundreds of volunteers packed boxes, supported distribution sites, or delivered directly to family homes. All together we supported 300 families this summer, an estimated 1,000 individuals. Our community came together to make sure no NSD student went hungry during the summer months. This is what we can do when working together, towards a common goal, and with a sense of purpose. Thank you to everyone that was involved in this important and caring endeavor.

Support Services staff were also busy preparing six school sites for major construction, grounds were prepared, teacher classrooms were set up, and small works projects including field and inclusive playground installations are well underway. I am pleased to report that we are fully staffed in transportation - helping to ensure predictable and consistent support for our students and families. This is a huge accomplishment, considering school transportation challenges felt across our region. Thank you to our staff for all your hard work in these critical areas.

Last week I was thrilled to welcome back our school leaders at our Leadership Learning Institute. Together, we reviewed student data, participated in training, and prepared for the school year. And over 1,000 families, students, and staff attended our annual Back-to-School Resource Fair on Aug. 8 at Pop Keeney. Thank you to the many community partners that supported the event, including our own Director Hayes who passed out free books to our students. The free book table was a highlight of the event.

As a reminder, the first day of school for most Northshore students is Tuesday, Sept. 3. Start of school details will be shared by each school. Next week, we will also publish a one-page, translated school calendar for families. This will replace our print calendar that was discontinued as part of our budget reduction. Look for the communication next week about the calendar for families.

I am deeply grateful and proud to serve such a great community and district; and I am looking forward to a strong start to the 2024-25 school year.

In partnership,

Michael Tolley

Superintendent

Back-to-School Resource Fair Serves Hundreds

The Northshore Back-to-School Resource Fair was held at Pop Keeney Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 8. The fair was an opportunity for families to interact with our community partners and District departments to learn about the resources available to them. Many of our Northshore families attended and were able to visit tables hosted by organizations like the Northshore Schools Foundation, King County Library System, Northshore Council PTSA, Threads & Treads, and many others. They also had an opportunity to learn more about District services through tables hosted by Northshore Food and Nutrition Services, Transportation, Student Services, and the Family Engagement and Resource Center.

A special thank you again to all our student and family volunteers who helped us with the fair this year to make it another success!

Apply Now for Free and Reduced-Price Meals

Families whose income falls within specified guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture should apply for free or reduced-price meals for their students. Don't forget – families must re-apply every year.

If you qualify for free or reduced-price meals you may also qualify for:

  • School fee waivers – a fee waiver form must be completed.
  • Other services such as health insurance – contact your school nurse for more information.

The online application only takes a few minutes and is the fastest, easiest way to get approved.

Student Device Protection Program and Fines for Damage or Loss

The Device Protection Program (DPP) covers the device (Chromebook, Macbook, or iPad) loaned to your student against accidental damage for the school year. This program does NOT cover damage resulting from misuse or loss of the device. The standard payment to enroll in the Student Device Protection Plan is $25 per year; free for students who have qualified for free or reduced-price meals and who have provided consent to share their status for fee waivers. If the assigned device is accidentally damaged, families will be charged according to a deductible schedule if enrolled in the Device Protection Program. If there is no DPP on file for a student when damage occurs and the fine is assessed, the full repair cost will be charged. Learn more about the program on our website.

Student Insurance - Optional

The health and safety of our students is of critical importance to the Northshore School District.  Even so, accidents happen, sometimes resulting in costly medical bills. Please know the district does not carry insurance for student personal injury costs (including athletics) and therefore cannot assume responsibility for them. As a service we're providing information regarding optional student insurance administered by Myers-Stevens & Toohey, Inc. These plans are used by many school districts across Washington.

Janmashtami

Janmashtami is a Hindu festival observed to celebrate the birth of Krishna, an incarnation of Vishnu, the supreme God. Most families fast all day and celebrate the festival in the evening at homes and in the temple. On this day people observing Janmashtami recap Krishna’s childhood with mischievous and courageous acts, friendship, love, affection, and compassion toward others, nature, and animals. Hindus believe Krishna appeared over 500 years ago to restore peace and righteousness on earth by destroying the evil forces.

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is a popular festival celebrated by Hindus. On this day, Hindus worship Lord Ganesh (elephant-headed divinity) to remove obstacles before undertaking any task such as starting a new school year, new job, new business, etc. Some people observing the festival fast on this day until dawn, prepare special meals, and share them with friends. It is one of the most colorful and joyous festivals for all Hindus.
