Update on Camera Upgrades Across the District

This summer important bond-funded safety upgrades were underway, including Phase 1 of the camera installation project, which aims to give staff the ability to monitor students and visitors, as well as deter vandalism on our campuses. This phase includes installing interior and exterior cameras at Frank Love, Kenmore, Maywood Hills, Shelton View, Woodin and Crystal Springs elementaries, and it follows the pilot project which was completed last spring at Westhill Elementary and Sorenson Early Childhood Center. Phase 1 is scheduled for completion by the end of November. Camera installation at the elementary level is segmented into four phases, all of which are expected to be complete in the next year to year and a half. Modernization of middle and high school camera systems is also progressing. The modernizations will enable better area coverage, improved technology, clearer images, better compression which reduces storage needs, and newer cameras that are compatible with a new video management system (VMS). To ensure security and integrity of the new VMS system, the team is working closely with District Technology. Additionally, the modernizations will ensure that there is similar coverage on each of our school campuses as specified by the Safe Schools Advisory Committee report from May 2019. The upgrades at the secondary level will be ongoing and are expected to be complete in 2022.

The order in which schools were selected for installation and modernizations was through assessments conducted by the District’s Safety & Security team. The assessments scored the schools and allowed the team to set priorities, in tandem with consideration of geographical logistics and other building improvement projects. Thank you to our generous Northshore voters who approved the 2018 bond, which makes these important safety upgrades possible for our students and staff.
