Northshore School Board Directors are elected community members who serve in a volunteer capacity, typically for 4 years. While each Board Director represents a specific area (five districts), they are responsible to all constituents within the Northshore School District boundaries. Northshore has a long history of having a high functioning School Board and is often held up as a model across our state. 

The Board's primary responsibilities are to:

• Establish district vision, goals, and policy
• Adopt and oversee the district’s annual budget, this includes approval of major expenditures such as curricula and bond and levies. 
• Ensure accountability for student outcomes (key performance outcomes)
• Represent the interests and values of the community
• Hire, supervise, and evaluate the Superintendent

The School Board governs the district and supervises one employee, the Superintendent. Board Directors play a vital role in ensuring that community voices are heard and considered in district decision-making.

Serving on the School Board requires a significant commitment of time and preparation. Board Directors typically participate in:

• Two regular Board meetings each month
• Board study sessions
• Community engagement meetings (i.e., quarterly Conversations with the Board)
• School and district events
• Liaison assignments (i.e., liaison to the Northshore School Foundation, Wall of Honor, etc.)
• Ten formal school visits a year 
• Independent preparation and review of meeting materials

Board Directors are expected to stay informed on educational issues and actively engage with the community they serve.

To be eligible for appointment, applicants must:

• Be a United States citizen
• Be a registered voter
• Reside within Northshore School District Director District 5 boundaries
• Be willing to serve in accordance with Board policies, Washington State law, and all applicable ethical obligations

The vacant position represents Director District 5, which generally serves the Woodinville area of Northshore School District. Interested applicants should verify that they reside within Director District 5 boundaries before applying.

While the Northshore School Board is responsible for the appointment of the new Board Director, the Board is also committed to conducting a transparent and community-informed appointment process. 

Following the close of the application period, Board Directors will review all applications and identify finalists. Finalists will participate in public interviews conducted during a special School Board meeting. In the last election cycle, key community partners drafted interview questions based on community feedback. With partner approval, the Board will reuse questions originally provided by community members during the 2025 election cycle. 

Following interviews, the Board will meet in a closed session to discuss the candidates’ responses and qualifications. Then the Board will meet in an open session to publicly vote on the new District 5 Board Director. The selected candidate will be sworn into office and begin serving at the next regular meeting of the Board,  which is anticipated to be September 14, 2026.
