Student Device Use, Damage & Fines

Each campus has a School Technology Specialist (STS) to support with immediate student technology needs. School office staff or Teacher-Librarian can connect you with your STS or you may submit a ticket for student technology help at go.nsd.org/studenttechhelp.

Students will: 

• Report damage and/or device malfunction to school staff in a timely manner;
• Protect the device from exposure to food and liquids, whether while storing, transporting, or using the device;
• Avoid storing materials within the closed device, such as papers, pens, or paperclips; ● Secure devices that are not in use; 
• Maintain the device by leaving intact all district labels, rubber bumpers, keys, and buttons, and by not decorating the device with markings or stickers; 
• Avoid leaving technology unattended or visible in a parked vehicle or other vulnerable location; ● Keep track of accessories such as the power cable and bag;
• Bring the device to school each day fully charged and ready for learning

Please promptly report any damage, loss, or stolen devices damages using the Student Support Ticketing System. If the student device is stolen, file an online police report to the county Sheriff’s office and obtain a case number and/or copy of the report. Avoidable damage, such as a broken screen, damaged housing/casing, or broken hinges, will result in a fine assessed to the student/family. Normal wear and tear will not incur a fine; lost devices and accessories will incur a fine equivalent to the replacement value of the item(s) lost. We cannot accept personally purchased replacement items, as they may not be compatible and cause safety issues or void warranties. 

Fines are based on the purchase price of each part, and does not reflect labor costs. The cost of a full chromebook replacement, including bag and charger, is $500.

Pay Tech Fine
In rare cases, a fine can be waived with approval from District Technology Staff.  If you want to apply for a fine waiver for a fine that has already been assessed, please complete this form.  

The Device Protection Program (DPP) protects the device (Chromebook, Macbook, or iPad) loaned to your student against accidental damage for the school year. We expect all students to properly use their device and to secure it when it is not being used. If the device is used improperly or is not secured while the student is not using it, families will be expected to pay the full cost of replacement or repair. DPP does NOT cover damage resulting from device misuse or lost and stolen devices. 

The standard payment to enroll in the NSD Student Device Protection Plan is $25 per year; free for students who have qualified for free or reduced-price meals and who have provided consent to share their status for fee waivers. No refunds will be given once enrolled in this program.  If the assigned device is accidentally damaged, families will be charged according to the following deductible schedule:

●    1st Incident; $0
●    2nd Incident; 50% reduction of cost of repair
●    3rd Incident; Full cost of repair

Enroll in DPP
Enrollment in DPP must occur before damage occurs for DPP to apply. If there is no DPP on file for a student when damage occurs and the fine is assessed, the full repair cost will be charged.
