Students’ research projects land top spots at science and engineering fair

Congratulations to several students who independently competed in the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair (WSSEF) after finishing in first place in their respective divisions at the state competition. Three students from Northshore School District then qualified and competed at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in mid-May.

The team project completed by North Creek High School senior Harini Thiagarajan and junior Vishal Yalla called “Implementation of an Integrated Machine Learning Approach for LIGO Continuous Gravitational Wave Searches,” won first place at the international fair last week in the Physics and Astronomy category. The team also won first place in Washington in the Physics and Astronomy category. Learn more about Vishal and Harini’s research project on the ISEF website.

The project completed by North Creek High School sophomore Bhavya Krishnan called “Locking the SUMO Switch: Design of Small Molecules To Inhibit Rhes SUMOylation Sites for Huntington’s Disease,” won first place in Washington in the Health and Biomedical Sciences category and was presented at the international fair last week. Bhavya also won the designation of grand champion with distinction at the regional competition. Learn more about Bhavya’s research project on the ISEF website.

In addition, North Creek High School sophomore Ritvik Bansal also took top honors at the state competition for his research titled “PerioVision: Revolutionizing Gum Disease Detection: Radiograph-Free, Non-Clinical, Zero-Cost Detection and Monitoring of Periodontitis with Computer Vision and Machine Learning – Bridging Healthcare Gaps in Underserved Communities.”

Congratulations to all of these students for their outstanding achievements and innovative research!
