Students from Across Northshore Schools Head to WA State History Day Contest on April 22
A student presents at National History Day held at Northshore Middle School

During the month of March, many of our Northshore students participated in National History Day. This year’s theme was "Frontiers In History: People, Places, and Ideas" and students from across the state and nation engaged. Northshore participation supported our strategic plan goal 4, “Innovative, Creative, Critical Thinkers,” and our unwavering commitment to ensuring that students have the opportunity to engage in learning that fosters creativity and imagination and builds confidence and competence to address personal, community, and global issues in collaborative and resourceful ways.

Northshore students independently select a historical topic related to the annual theme, and then conduct primary and secondary research. They accessed libraries, archives, and museums, conducted oral history interviews, and visited historic sites to gather information. After they analyzed and interpreted their sources and drew conclusions about the significance of the topic, they presented their work in one of five ways: as a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website.

The regional competition for National History Day was hosted at Northshore Middle School this year. It was a very successful event, and we want to celebrate all the students that participated and the staff that supported. The contest featured 294 students with 197 entries from 13 schools. Our contest serves the following King County School Districts: Seattle, Shoreline, Northshore, Mercer Island, and Bainbridge Island. There are two divisions: Junior (6-8 grade) and Senior (9-12 grade). Students entered either as an individual or in a group.

The North Puget Sound Regional Contest for History Day concluded March 18 and our students did very well!

Northshore advanced 53 projects to the WA State History Day Contest that will be held on April 22, 2023, at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland.
