North Creek Senior Kiprey Kalume Named Washington State Winner of 2025 John Lewis Youth Leadership Award

Congratulations to North Creek High School senior Kiprey Kalume, who was recently announced to be the Washington state winner of the 2025 National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) John Lewis Youth Leadership Award.

The John Lewis Youth Leadership Award was created in February 2021, as a way to recognize gifted, civic-minded young people. Kiprey has a leadership role in NCHS’ Black Student Union, helping to organize the district-wide Juneteenth celebration and has been active in seeking ways to counter microaggressions toward all students and increase awareness of immigrant communities from African nations. Having moved to Seattle from the Congo at a young age, Kiprey has maintained a connection to and an appreciation for the culture of the Congo. She founded Bana ya Congo Seattle (BCYS) - Kids of Congo Seattle, coordinating a Congolese Independence Day celebration that served as a fundraiser for children in Congo. She weaves these passions into her academic studies as well. Congratulations to Kiprey for this deserved award!
