A Message from Interim Superintendent Michael Tolley

Dear Northshore Community,

It is an honor to be selected as the interim superintendent for the Northshore School District. I want to thank the Northshore School Board for their continued leadership and for trusting me with this responsibility and the opportunity to serve our students, families, staff, and the entire Northshore community.

We all owe a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Michelle Reid. Her six years of leadership have propelled the Northshore School District forward and upward. I have enjoyed working as a part of her leadership team over the past three years as assistant superintendent for the East Region.

During that time, I have listened and learned from students, families, and staff. When concerns were raised in these conversations, I worked to improve the learning experiences and academic outcomes for every student.

As interim superintendent, I look forward to continued listening, learning, and building relationships with our diverse Northshore community members across all of our regions. Your voice matters. As is my preference, I will also reflect on data prior to taking action that will build on our existing major initiatives and programs.

As your interim superintendent, I am committed to ensuring that each of our more than 22,000 students has equitable access to high-quality teaching and learning. I am also deeply committed to continuing implementation of our District’s Strategic Plan including culturally responsible teaching and learning, strong relationships with families and the community, professional learning and supports for district staff, and data-informed needs-based resource allocation.

Ultimately, I am the one person responsible for everything that does or does not happen in our classrooms. This is a responsibility I take very seriously, and I know all staff also take responsibility for the education of each and every one of our students. We are particularly focused on those who are furthest from educational justice — many of our students of color, our students with disabilities, and our multilingual learners. Let me be clear though, when we achieve racial and educational justice, every student and staff member will benefit. Further, our community will benefit.

We all recognize that the past two-and-a-half years have been extremely challenging for everyone, especially our students and our staff. There is a lot of work to do as we continue to address the effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our entire Northshore community.

I can’t do this alone. This has been, and will continue to be, a collaborative effort that brings us all together to focus on the needs of each and every student.

I greatly appreciate the support of the Northshore community, both in our day-to-day work, and in approving our recent school bond and levies. Thank you for your continued trust in our school district.

This summer, our focus is on preparations for a smooth start to the 2022-23 school year. As we move forward, I will be reaching out to Northshore staff and to members of our community to ensure that we can continue to work together to effectively meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students. Our mission is to strengthen our community through excellence in education. Together, let’s work to make sure the Northshore School District continues to be a destination for families seeking an outstanding educational experience for their learners as well as for dedicated educators and staff.

Thank you again for this opportunity to serve the Northshore community. We are better together.
