Art Docent Newsletter: Fall 2023

Happy October!

The new school year is off to a strong start and we are excited to hear all about the art projects and activities that our District art docents have planned for this school year. We are grateful for your continued commitment and dedication to art experiences with our students. We hope you find this newsletter and materials on our district art docent portal helpful during your time as a docent.

Vincent van Gogh Lesson at Shelton View

Shelton View art docent Carol Miu gave a lesson on Vincent van Gogh. Students learned about his bold, dramatic brush strokes art style that allowed him to express emotion and add movement to his work. After Ms. Carol's lesson, she taught students about self portraits so that they could create their own. If you're in the Shelton View office, some of them are hanging up so take a peek!

The District will host an Art Docent training at the District administration building on October 27. Art Docent trainers Quinn Wyatt and Danielle Wheeler will be doing a lesson on how to build a framework and lesson plan based on the materials/mediums available at each school (since materials do vary from school to school). They will also compare crayon and oil pastels as well as watercolor and tempera.

Details:
When: Friday, Oct. 27
Time: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m
Where: Admin Center, Board Room (3330 Monte Villa Parkway Bothell, WA 98021)
No registration required

The Northshore School District Art Docent Program training team has demonstration videos available that you can view from the comfort of your own home. Although we encourage docents to attend in-person training offered by your school or the District Training Team, please use these to support your learning to confidently lead lessons in the classroom. We will upload the Oct. 27 training session video recording by Nov. 3.

View the Video Library here. A passkey is required to access the Art Docent portal, so please send an email to partnerships@nsd.org to request the passkey.

Thank You Volunteers, PTAs and School Staff

The goal of the Northshore Art Docent Program is to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for family and community members in our classrooms while expanding art experiences our NSD students receive. Thanks to the wonderful partnership of school PTAs and schools, docents have access to a variety of art materials at their school to lead these art experiences. Materials do vary from school to school so please check with your school before planning to lead a framework with students.
