C.P. & Dorothy Johnson Humanitarian Award

The award was established in honor of two educators who dedicated their lives to improving the lives of all children in our community. As part of this honor, we recognize two students from each school who display the characteristics of a humanitarian in their school and community.

Selection Criteria

Recipients of the C.P. & Dorothy Johnson Humanitarian Award consistently demonstrate value and dignity of others, treat others with respect, and promote the common good. Recipients were selected based on three criteria:

Acceptance

Students who promote the value and celebration of their peers’ strengths, abilities, and identities.

Community

Students who demonstrate the ability to promote and foster collaboration toward a common goal, fairness, freedom of expression, and effective communication within a group.

Advocacy

Students who support the needs of, and encourage equitable opportunities and resources for their peers.

 

 

C.P. and Dorothy Johnson

C.P. Johnson
Dorothy Johnson

Clifford Paul (C.P.) Johnson was born in March, 1909 and was raised on a farm in a French colony near New Orleans. He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and taught at several locations in the South and Southwest. During the war, he served as a U.S.O. Director for the Government. Over time, C.P. obtained a master’s degree in School Administration from the University of Washington in 1951.

Dorothy Louise Harris Johnson was born May, 1919 in Dallas, Texas. At the age of 16, Dorothy was admitted to Wiley College in Texas and earned her bachelor’s degree in Education. She went on to receive a master’s degree in Special Education at the University of Washington.

C.P. and Dorothy married during the war and made their first home in Austin, Texas. They lived and taught in Austin for 14 years. The Johnsons relocated to Seattle where C.P. and Dorothy accepted teaching positions in the Shoreline School District.

The couple moved to Bothell in 1961 and held their positions in Shoreline until 1969, when C.P. became Northshore School District’s first Coordinator of Minority Studies. He brought to the Northshore community a new awareness of the values of ethnic diversity speaking often of the responsibilities schools and communities have to understand the contributions of all people. Dorothy too had a way of showing those she met, their worth, skills and untapped abilities.

Adil Rasheed exemplifies the spirit of a true humanitarian through his consistent commitment to acceptance, community, and advocacy. He values and uplifts his peers, fosters respectful and collaborative environments, and ensures others feel heard and included. Adil actively supports equitable opportunities for all students, demonstrating empathy and integrity. His actions reflect a deep respect for others and a genuine dedication to promoting a positive and inclusive school community.

Aika Yanagimoto

Aika is involved all over Bothell High School. She is the President of Communities for Our Colleges and also organizes BHS students and coordinates lobbying of the Wa State legislature to create equitable access to college. Aika also participates in Bothell Youth Court as a respondent coordinator and our BHS youth court. Aika also participates full time in competitive gymnastics and was Captain of the BHS gymnastics team and is President of Model UN. Aika is an exceptional student and human being.

Akain Wickramaratna

Akain embodies exceptional character through his honesty, caring nature, and thoughtful approach to every interaction. He creates an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and respected, consistently demonstrating helpfulness to his peers. Akain patiently explains concepts and guides classmates through challenges with kindness. His kind-hearted nature shines through in his willingness to support others, whether by lending a listening ear or offering practical assistance. He serves as an inspiring role model, demonstrating that true strength lies in compassion, integrity, and lifting others up.

Andrew Wright

Andrew shows genuine care and support for others. He demonstrates the ability to see, accept, and uplift people, including those different from himself. This year, Andrew consistently showed up for peers during pivotal moments. Despite facing significant challenges, including moving homes and navigating emotional challenges, he was there for those who needed him. His empathy, dedication, and consistent efforts to support others make him a true humanitarian and gift to SAS.

Anirudh Ulabala

Anirudh brings a rare level of dedication to the Student Council, showing up every day with a commitment to serve. He never seeks the spotlight, instead choosing to lift others up and share credit. Whether leading a project or supporting from the sidelines, his positive energy and great attitude make a huge difference. He leads by example, intuitively knowing when to speak up and when to offer quiet encouragement. His authentic enthusiasm is contagious, and we are grateful for the vital, "behind-the-scenes" contributions he makes.

Annabelle Lutz

Anna is a compassionate and service-oriented senior. She generously volunteers her time working with students with disabilities. Anna also consistently shows care for both students and staff at SAS. She goes out of her way to welcome new students, helping them feel seen, supported and that they belong. She continues to check in with them long after their first day. Anna’s kindness, empathy, and commitment to others make a meaningful and lasting difference in our community.

Ariel Morales

Ariel consistently demonstrates her commitment to community; by acceptance of others through her words and actions; and advocates for our students as a Junior Coach. Ariel has been a junior coach for three years. When someone needs help, Ariel is often among the first to offer her support. She is quiet, calm and leads with a confidence that naturally draws others to listen and follow her guidance. Even when faced with challenging tasks, she approaches them with determination and always gives her best effort.

Arin Deb

Arin is helpful, kind, and dependable. He reliably helps his peers both socially and academically with a fun sense of humor. He has a unique ability to be flexible, understanding, and supportive with a variety of students. Because of his inclusive nature, Arin is recognized among his peers. You’ll see students saying "Hi Arin" when he is walking down the hall and he is quick to greet them with a smile, handshake or hello. Arin is a true humanitarian and we’re proud to recognize him.

Asher Thomas

Asher consistently goes above and beyond to support his friends and classmates. His genuine concern for others is demonstrated through his actions. Do you need a listening ear? The directions given again? A word of encouragement? Asher is always there, ready to lend a hand, offer encouragement, or lift someone up. His compassionate spirit makes our school community stronger and inspires those around him to be kind and think of others.

Aubrey Salmon

Aubrey is a natural leader and role model.  She shows kindness to her peers, works hard academically, and is positive, upbeat and inclusive. As a result, people gravitate toward her. She serves as a WEB Leader, and fully embraces the values of Leota. Aubrey puts her best effort in all that she does and holds herself to the highest standards. She is a mature and respectful student who will grow to be a strong individual and member of our community.

Audrey Mustonen

Audrey is an inspiring and gracious student who greets each day with a positive outlook, hard-working attitude, and generous heart. She is welcoming of others while accepting and valuing their differences. Not only does she demonstrate the ability to empathize with others, but she’s not afraid to speak out for what she believes is right. Audrey is a collaborative classmate who supports her peers through challenges and celebrates their successes. She is an integral part of our classroom and school community at Canyon Park.

Avery Jensen

Avery is a true student leader and champion of ALL students. She leads from the back, jumps in without being asked, arrives early, stays up all night, does whatever it takes to make our students experience the best. She's the ASB President, a two-year Link Crew Leader, a varsity softball student-athlete, has a job outside of school, and has a cumulative GPA of 3.87. She is the best!

Ayla Ghorbanian

Ayla is a steady friend, compassionate listener, and confident advocate for all students. She puts forth her best effort each and every day, ensuring that she contributes to making Shelton View a welcoming community for all. During group projects, Ayla is a kind leader who celebrates all of her peers' strengths and communicates effectively. Outside of the classroom, she shows her strong leadership & community-building skills through her leadership role as a Shelton View Bus Leader.

Ben Nguyen

Ben is a positive leader and role model on the IHS campus. He goes out of his way to ensure everyone is included and celebrated. He has made coming to school fun by playing music at the entrance, and by encouraging participation in events. He is creative in figuring out ways to get students involved and will bring anyone along. Usually one of the first to volunteer to help, Ben ensures spirit is high and that everyone is involved. Leading by example, he makes Inglemoor a better place.

Brooke Wagner

Brooke Wagner is an exceptional leader, advocate, and student-athlete who lifts others to give their best. She volunteers readily, models Timbercrest's pillars of respect, responsibility, and inclusivity, and demonstrates kindness and patience in all settings. In the classroom, Brooke cares deeply about her own learning and that of her peers, working collaboratively and inspiring others. She instinctively includes others both inside and outside the classroom. Her positive attitude and infectious demeanor reflect a selfless, mature young adult with remarkable grace. Brooke betters our community daily.

Claire Stewart

Claire has been a leader in Unified Club and IHS' inclusion program for four years. She is consistently promoting inclusion and building meaningful connections between students with and without disabilities, she empowers students, models empathy, communicates in preferred forms and makes everyone feel welcome. She models teamwork, speaks up for others, and elevates those around her while holding herself to high standards. Claire participates in all Unified events and works as a peer coach, ensuring that all students see every peer through a lens of kindness and understanding.

Cypress Inouye

Cypress is a leader who is consistently thoughtful about others. Without being asked, he goes out of his way to take care of the people and things around him, often noticing ways to help the classroom community. He is a willing partner to any peer and inclusive of others when working in groups. Cypress leads a multi-age group of students as part of our Sun Family program. Cypress demonstrates leadership every day.

Devon Tussing-Adkinson

Devon is a remarkable student whose curiosity and tenacity have left a lasting impression on our school community. She effectively balances her academic and athletic commitments, contributes positively to the sense of community within WHS, and consistently puts forth her best effort to be inclusive towards all students. Her work ethic is complemented by a genuine empathy and desire to uplift those around her, qualities that will serve her well in her next adventure and chapter of her life.

Duda consistently shows a remarkable commitment to serving others before herself.  She is not only resilient in the face of adversity, but a fierce advocate for her school community through acts of service. Duda is incredibly positive, friendly, and selfless. Duda is an advocate for herself and others, seeks solutions, and asks for help. She works hard and puts her best effort into everything she tries. She is kind to everyone she meets. Her generosity, selflessness, and caring nature makes her a true humanitarian.

Eli Jones is an incredibly kind and thoughtful student who genuinely cares about the people around him. He is always friendly, quick to help classmates, and consistently treats others with respect, even when others may not show him the same courtesy. Eli helps create a welcoming and supportive classroom simply through the way he treats people each day, which says a lot about his character and the way he looks out for others.

Eloise is an advocate for others, and her positivity stands out. Her peers consistently identify her as the kindest person they know. Anyone that she works with feels cared for, heard, and accepted for who they are. Eloise is a member of our school lost and found management team and also leads a multi-age group of students as part of our Sun Family program. Her thoughtful character and calm presence make her a positive and valued member of our school community.

Emily is a kind and thoughtful student and friend in and out of the classroom. She always seeks to understand an assignment, situation, or conflict before she acts. Faith-Violet has demonstrated thoughtfulness and kindness throughout her time here at Kenmore Elementary. She approaches her peers and teachers with genuine care and consideration. She consistently goes above and beyond to assist and uplift those around her. Her enthusiasm for learning is evident as she actively seeks opportunities to expand her knowledge, often challenging herself to step outside of her comfort zone in pursuit of educational growth. Grace embodies the spirit of a humanitarian. She greets everyone with a smile, lifts others’ spirits, and brings joy with her witty humor. She goes above and beyond to support peers with empathy and encouragement, ensuring everyone is included, successful, and cared for.  Grace is friendly, always welcoming new students and noticing when someone needs a helping hand. Beyond school, she has volunteered for three years at an elementary school, supporting young students’ growth. A true upstander, Grace fosters belonging and makes our community stronger.

At recess, he started a soccer group that has built community and sparked new friendships. Hanna McGill

Hanna is a high-achieving student who is remarkably kind and welcoming to all students. As a TA, she was incredibly organized, set up WEB events, delivered materials, organized supplies, and worked independently with staff. She regularly assisted other teachers throughout the building and was a tremendous asset. In my 6th grade ELA class, she consistently went above and beyond, knowing every student's name, mentoring those needing academic support, and bringing out the best in their behavior. Hanna makes a huge impact wherever she goes.

Harry consistently lifts others up in the classroom by supporting peers with their classwork and helping them understand difficult concepts. He is a dependable and reliable teammate on the playground and models exemplary behavior throughout school—in classrooms, hallways, and specialist classes. Harry is genuinely helpful to teachers and regularly puts others first, allowing classmates to shine even when he could be in the spotlight. His generosity and kindness are truly admirable.

Haruki consistently demonstrates strong integrity, honesty, and respect for all. He has an exceptional work ethic and demonstrates that through academic excellence and participation on the school cross country and track teams. Haruki is accepting of his peers and consistently leads by example. He is trustworthy and can be counted on to encourage others to do their best and influence peers in positive ways. His effort and determination while running distance races in both track and cross country have shown his true ability to persevere.

JJ often uses his voice to advocate for the needs of his non-verbal classmates, demonstrating remarkable support for everyone in both special and general education settings. Always looking to include friends in activities, he notices when someone is absent and ensures they feel valued. A wonderful role model, JJ’s heart for kindness, loving nature, and acceptance truly sets him apart.

Kai is a gentle, thoughtful student who consistently looks for the good in everyone around him. He enjoys making meaningful connections with others and shows genuine care for his classmates and community. Kai’s creativity shines through as he helps generate ideas that bring people together. Kaira Gupta-Tajane

Kaira is a member of the PM Dolphin class. When we think of what it means to be kind, we think of Kaira. She is a friend to everyone and always includes those around her, making sure others feel welcome. She offers thoughtful ideas, like putting markers in the middle so everyone can reach them. Kaira is also intentionally kind to adults, giving compliments and recognizing good ideas. She inspires us to be more kind and thoughtful.

Knox is a kind and thoughtful individual who consistently ensures everyone feels included both in the classroom and on the playground. He treats others with respect and helps create a welcoming environment for everyone around him. He loves sports, and he is always including new students or those who might not know how to join in. Knox is also hardworking and demonstrates strong perseverance, continuing to work through difficult tasks with a positive attitude.

Lahyna is a powerful force for community, bringing people together through ASB leadership, Best Buddies, and student voice forums where she champions fairness, inclusion, and open expression. Lahya’s advocacy stands out, through her ability to connect with others, she builds trust across groups and uses those relationships to make every space more inclusive, supportive, and representative for all students.

Laila is a committed leader at Fernwood, demonstrating kindness, positivity, and acceptance. She is part of student council, safety patrol, and the Panther Resolution Seekers. She is a strong student advocate, consistently supporting her peers and exemplifies Fernwood’s values of safety, kindness, and learning. She is involved with Fernwood's garden club, spearheading research on native and nontoxic plants on or near the campus. Leading by example, she serves as a role model with her embrace of diversity and thoughtful encouragement of others.

Laksh possesses a genuine positivity and kindness with a charming smile and personality that lights up a room. He is Captain of the school's safety patrol and an enthusiastic participant in Fernwood's marimba band and ukulele club. Laksh sets a positive example through his safe, kind, and eager approach to learning, always ready to help a fellow student in need. Laksh is a strong collaborator, fostering positive interactions among students. He is quick to express gratitude or provide positive feedback to both staff and students.

She is a bus buddy, a leader in Woodin's Green and Gold News, and participates in a variety of other clubs. She embodies inclusivity and shows up every day representing our school values and mission.

Maeve is a kind, caring, and thoughtful student who consistently supports both her teachers and classmates. She is always eager to help, offers kind and encouraging words, and makes sure to include everyone in her play. Maeve is an intelligent and articulate learner who enjoys sharing her ideas and contributes positively to class discussions while also listening respectfully to others. She shows genuine empathy toward her peers and is quick to offer help or comfort when it is needed.

Mariam Saleem

Mariam Saleem is a quiet advocate. She approaches situations with an open mind and creates safe spaces for all whom she encounters. She speaks from her heart, giving voice to the marginalized. She stands up for what she believes even when this is hard. She volunteers 5 hours a week at Iqra Islamic School where she works with elementary aged children with their studies and their emotional well-being. She also helps those students with disabilities access the curricula. Mariam’s service is one to be emulated.

Her exceptional work ethic and positive attitude make her an outstanding role model who truly embodies what it means to be a humanitarian.

Nalani is an exceptional young person who embodies the spirit of this award. She consistently shows kindness, thoughtfulness, and a genuine desire to make others feel included. Confident and hardworking, she approaches challenges with determination and supports her classmates with quiet, steady leadership. Since joining our school, Nalani has helped create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued. She truly lives the Westhill Way—respectful, responsible, and safe—making her a positive role model whose actions help foster a strong sense of belonging.

Natalie Lantz

Natalie is a consistently kind and helpful member of our community. She volunteers for countless roles within Frank Love and always supports others with a smile. Natalie welcomes new students with open arms and makes it a point to say hello everyone and check in on how others are doing. Natalie regularly visits past teachers to ask if there is any way she can help and is always willing to engage and play with younger students. Frank Love is a better place because of Natalie.

Natalie is a gentle but confident leader who improves her community through direct actions, unsolicited kindness, and inclusion. Natalie actively participates in the school Safety Patrol, Green Team, and weekly news reports. Through these teams she is a positive role model and effective communicator who works to improve her school community. Natalie is also jumps in with acts of compassion. She is clearly guided by a sense of what is fair, just and ensures people are being treated with respect and equity.

Nick is an advocate of equity and fairness, and he shows acceptance and care for his peers. He is an ambassador for our school, always welcoming and connecting with new peers, staff and visitors. Nick has modeled the importance of belonging and valuing the contributions of everyone in our school community. He offers authenticity, support and love in our community every single day. Nick represents our school vision of inclusive community and has helped us achieve it every day.

Nila Gopal

Nila Gopal is always looking for opportunities to help others and shows an incredible amount of patience when supporting peers. She deeply cares about others and goes out of her way to make her classmates feel valued. She is kind, respectful, and an incredible member of our classroom community. If a student is having a bad day or feeling left out, Nila is someone who will put in that extra effort to make their day just a little bit better.

Nova is kind, inclusive, and consistently reaches out to ensure every student feels welcome and valued. She demonstrates deep compassion, often noticing when others are struggling and taking action to support them. Nova uses her voice to advocate for her peers and works thoughtfully to help resolve conflicts as a peacemaker.
