As some of you know, I taught high school students Biology, Advanced Placement Biology, and Marine Biology for over 15 years and college students Molecular and Cell Biology for 10 years.
What many of you may not know is that I also had the privilege of teaching middle school and high school students about the marine environment along the coast of South Carolina during the summer. The courses I taught in field study Marine Biology reinforced students’ prior learning as well as accelerated their academic content knowledge and skills.
I want Northshore students to have these same rich, engaging, and hands-on learning experiences during the summer months.
I recently visited the District’s Summer Learning programs at the Canyon Creek Elementary and Skyview Middle School campus. The Summer Programs offered included the Extended School Year (ESY) and Recovery Services for our students with disabilities and learning differences as well as a Literacy and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program.
Collectively more than 300 students participated in these programs over three to four weeks. While some of the goals of the programs varied, all included a focus on accelerated academic learning and the preparation of students for a strong 2022-23 school year. In many ways, the outcomes were so much more for our youngest learners, as we emphasized small-group collaboration and hands-on lessons.
I want to thank our dedicated staff who made this program possible. Many hours of preparation went into ensuring students were appropriately challenged and supported.
In partnership,
Michael Tolley
Interim Superintendent
