March 11-15, 2024 was Education Support Professionals Week (formerly Classified Week), and an opportunity to recognize all of the contributions of our dedicated classified staff here in Northshore. To our classified staff - last week and every week we honor you for the many contributions you make to the well-being and education of our students. Whether you drive a school bus, prepare nutritious meals, provide small group instruction, maintain school grounds and facilities, support students when they aren’t feeling well, repair vehicles or manage a busy school office, you are essential to providing our students with an excellent education. Your work is seen and deeply appreciated. Thank you for all that you do every day.

Ramadan takes place now through April 9
As a reminder, many of our Northshore families are currently observing Ramadan. Ramadan is an Islamic religious observance and is expected to end on April 9 this year. Ramadan is a time for connection, celebration, deep reflection, and continued prayer. It is possible that Northshore's practicing Muslim students will fast, including no food or drink (as well as water), from dawn to dusk through the duration of this observance. You’ll find insights and ideas to support our Muslim students during Ramadan linked from this weekly Northshore Learns & Announcements message.
Nowruz is March 19
Nowruz takes place on the spring equinox, which is the first day in the Persian calendar. The new year is celebrated at the exact moment of the vernal equinox, which is March 19, 2024, this year. Over 300 million people all around the world celebrate Nowruz and it has been observed for more than 3,000 years. It is observed by various ethnic groups across Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Balkans, including Iranian, Pakistani, Afghan, Turkish, Tajik, and Kurdish communities. Note that the spelling of Nowruz varies by country. It can be spelled correctly in numerous different ways, including Nawrouz, Novruz, Navruz, Nooruz, Nevruz, and Newroz. We want to wish a joyous Nowruz to our students, families, and educators who celebrate!
Holi celebrated March 24
Holi is a festival of colors celebrated by Hindus around the world this year on Sunday, March 24 (note this date has been correct from what was originally published). Holi is celebrated to mark the arrival of spring, victory of good over evil, spreading friendship, peace, and joy in the community. On the previous day, people light bonfires and dance around it. The next morning people join together on the streets, sprinkle colors on each other, and share sweets. The bonfires represent destroying bacteria in the air, and colors represent strengthening the immune system and adding beauty. A number of community events are taking place on Saturday, March 23 in celebration of Holi.
