Science Registration Information

Dear future North Creek 9th and 10th Grade Families:

I am writing today to offer you an exciting choice this coming year with respect to science registration.  As you probably know, all incoming 9th and 10th grade students were automatically registered for Biology next year as that course is a graduation requirement.

However, North Creek High School has been given the opportunity to offer Advanced Placement (AP) Environmental Science as a replacement for the biology credit.  In other words, students in 9th and 10th grades next year at North Creek High School have two different ways to earn that mandatory biology credit:  1) take the regular Biology course or 2) take AP Environmental Science instead.

You might be asking:  what are the differences between the two courses?  Here are the course descriptions from the NSD course catalog to help you make that decision:

Advanced Placement (AP) Environmental Science:

The class will provide students with an understanding of the scientific principles that govern interrelationships in the natural world. Important environmental issues will be explored and the comparative risks of known and potential problems will be evaluated. Specific focus on finding solutions to current and future challenges will be highlighted. This course meets college entrance requirements for an algebra-based science.

Additionally, as an AP course, students may be able to earn college credits and/or placement for successfully passing the optional AP exam in the spring.

Biology is the study of the living world and our relationship to it. This course is aligned to the NGSS (WSSLS) high school performance expectations for life science and also integrates sustainability principles. As a result, the major disciplinary themes are: metabolism, behavior, genetics, evolution, ecology and sustainability. Students will engage in both science and

engineering practices as they explore the themes and relate them to the cross-cutting concepts of science.

Here are your action steps:

1.     If you want your student to remain in Biology for next year, you do not need to do anything.  Your student is already registered for Biology.

2.     If you want your student to switch from Biology to AP Environmental Science, please fill out this simple 4-question Google form indicating that request to switch:  Note:  once you switch, that decision is binding and final.  I hire teachers based on student requests and I cannot go back on contracts because people change their minds later.

3.     The deadline for making this switch is Friday January 20th.

4.     Note:  if you have a pending waiver, making this change does not in any way confirm that your wavier has or has not been approved.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration!
