	NSD Levy Information

Northshore School District will run a $12 million Supplemental Educational Maintenance and Operations Levy on Aug. 17 to sustain funding support for student learning.

In March, the state legislature passed a law allowing communities to temporarily increase the amount of local levy support for their schools through a supplemental levy. The four-year measure would help offset statewide funding cuts by increasing the levy lid by 4%.

If passed, the district could collect up to a maximum of $12 million over four years: $4.5 million in 2011, $2.3 million in 2012, and $2.6 million in years 2013 and 2014. The district may collect only up to the amount approved by voters regardless of assessed valuation changes.

The supplemental levy would help sustain-not enhance- the district's educational program. The district has already absorbed multi-million dollar cuts in state funding over the past two years, and it is highly likely there may be further cuts in state funding. The current projection is that the state legislature may face a $4 billion deficit next year, and federal stimulus money being used to "backfill" the state budget will be gone.

An average annual increase of $56 is projected for a $400,000 home over the four years of the measure, if passed. The overall school tax rate with the supplemental levy is projected to be $4.24 per $1,000 of assessed property value in 2011 and is projected to drop to $4.14-$4.15 per $1,000 of assessed property value from 2012-14.

	ABC Steering Committee

ABC Steering Committee

The ABC Steering Committee is please to announce that Mark Bailey will be joining our committee as the 2nd at-large community member. Each year, one at large community member is elected to replace the member who has completed a two-year term. Since there were no other candidates, Mark will be appointed and an election will not be necessary.
ABC Steering Committee Membership: Two at-large community members (rotate two year terms), one PTA appointed representative, one teacher appointed by the school leadership team, one teacher elected at-large by the school, and the principal. This provides a balance of three school and three community representatives on the steering committee.

To introduce our families to their newest representative, Mark's nomination statement is listed below. Thank you Mark for you willingness to serve on this essential committee.

Candidate for At-Large Community member:
I am a member of the Bear Creek Elementary community with children in the fifth grade and kindergarten--Cooper and Makenna. The ABC Auction benefits the BC students in so many ways and is an event I look forward to each year. I would like to participate on the steering committee to help distribute, monitor, and assess the benefits of the auction funds to BC students. I will listen and work with students, parents, and staff to insure all ideas are considered and the auction funds are used effectively.

	Tentative Grade Level Configurations

The following list shows Bear Creek's tentative grade level staffing for next year. Bear Creek's staffing has been reduced by one full time general education position. As many of our families know, Heather Mallory recently gave birth to her first child. Mrs. Mallory has requested a one-year leave of absence for next year. Mrs. Mallory will return to work in the fall of 2011.
