Northshore Kindergarten Orientations
for 2010-2011

The Northshore School District invites parents of incoming kindergarten students to the annual kindergarten orientations:

Wednesday, Feb. 24, 7-8 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 25, 7-8 p.m.

Both sessions will be at the Northshore Performing Arts Center, located at Bothell High School.

A panel of educators will discuss the district's kindergarten program, describe typical kindergarten activities, and answer questions from the audience. Children entering kindergarten September 2010 should have turned five years old by Aug. 31.

A multi-lingual kindergarten orientation will be held on March. 2, 7-8 p.m., at the Woodmoor Elementary Library, 12225 NE 160th St., in Bothell. Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese interpreters will be available. Childcare will be provided for the multi-lingual kindergarten orientation only.

Kindergarten registration for all Northshore public schools will be March 15 to March 31. Specific dates for each school will be posted at www.nsd.org in February.  If you have questions, please call Elementary Education at 425-408-7705.

School Levy Bonds Information

Three measures are on the ballot February 9th to continue support for student learning in Northshore: a Capital Projects Bond, Renewal Education Operations Support Levy and a Technology Levy.  Together, these measures support student learning.

The $149.2 million bond would continue the district's long-range facilities plan to maintain and renovate aging schools and provide key infrastructure support such as roofs, heating systems and Internet capability for schools and classroom learning spaces.

The Renewal Education Operations Support Levy provides 20% of the district's budget for daily operations and educational programs.  It would renew the current four-year levy that expires in 2010 and would provide up to $169 million over the next four years.

The Renewal School Technology Levy would maintain and enhance classroom technology to support student learning.  It would replace the current levy that expires in 2010 and would provide $24 million over the next four years.
The school tax rate is projected to remain level with the 2010 school tax rate over the four years of the measures at $4.07 per $1,000 of assessed property value.  The district may collect only up to the amount approved by voters regardless of assessed valuation changes.  More information about these measures is available on the district Web site at www.nsd.org or by contacting the Communications Department at 425 408-7670.

Remember to Vote February 9th on School Measures

Moorlands general music specialist Kelly Griffin was elected as the NATIONAL President of the Organization of American Kodaly Educators. She will be President-elect beginning in 2010 and then will assume the presidency from 2012-2014. Kodaly is a system of music education that is very effective for students and is used world-wide. (Kodaly is the name of the composer who developed this system of music education.)
Congratulations to Mrs. Griffin!  This is a well-deserved honor for someone who's leadership and vision have created such an excellent music program here at Moorlands.

H1N1 (Swine Flu) information:

The health department

Posted 10/22/09 - Like other districts, we are experiencing more flu-related absences in our schools.  It would not be unusual to see absence rates in a classroom or school of 10 to 20%. We continue to remind students about prevention strategies and appreciate your help with keeping ill children at home until they are fever free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication).

Without proper precautions, the flu can spread easily from person to person.  We need your help.
