The Kenmore Junior High FLL (FIRST Lego League) Team under the direction of Technology Education teacher Kevin Lane, won two awards at the Dec. 5 Regional competition at Lynnwood High and advanced to the Dec. 12 State competition at Bellevue High.  They won the Rising Star Award - this award is given by judges to honor a team that shows strong skills across the board, as well as First Place in Robot Performance - Kenmore's "Papa Wheelie" robot received 340 points out of a possible 400 points. The next highest score was 280 points.
Mr. Lane also attributes the team's success to the endless volunteer hours that Mrs. Vandivort, Mr. Lettic and Mrs. Godfrey donated to work with the team. Congratulations to team members: Chris Colella, Christine Samuelson, Som Chavanachat, Scott Vandivort, Thomas Lettic, Carl Worthey, Alex Lueng, Owen Godfrey, and Ben Du.

WAY TO GO, COLTS!

First semester has ended and report cards are being prepared. Report cards will be given to students during their 6th period class on February 10th. Check with your student if you don't see it by Friday, February 12th. Students who have an unpaid fine will receive a fine letter instead of a report card. Once the fine is paid, a report card will be issued. If you have questions, please call our main office.

Our own Social Studies teacher, Tom Petersen, won "Honorable Mention" in the annual Lesson Plan Contest sponsored by the International Bluegrass Music Association. His entry, "Bluegrass Topics for the National History Day Contest" described how various aspects of the history, technology, artistry, and lore of Bluegrass, Country, and Americana Music often fit the themes of the National History Day contest. Kenmore students have done projects on the Medicine Show roots of Country and Jazz, Folk legend Jean Ritchie, and innovations in Bluegrass.
Mr. Petersen has also used folk music in his History classes for many years. Mr. Petersen is a presenter and assistant with the educational programs for the Wintergrass Bluegrass Festival in Bellevue, Washington, including the Teachers Workshop, and the Youth Academy.
The International Bluegrass Music Association has music, cultural, and heritage resources for teachers on its website, www.ibma.org, including lesson plans from all the contest winners over the years.  Lesson plans cover all subjects: math, science, history, English, music, art, business, technology, drama, special education, and elementary education.  This year's top awards were for high school English classes (examining murder ballads, and the legend of John Henry) and early elementary intro to music (using Froggy Went A-courtin').

Mr. Petersen has coached History Day at KJH for 16 years, and has judged the contest for 25. National History Day is a contest in which students do serious research and produce extensive, high quality reports, displays, documentaries, plays, and websites on historical topics, fitting an annual theme (such as this year's "Innovation in History"). The History Day contest has regional, state, and national levels.  More information, including lists of past winners, can be found at www.nationalhistoryday.org.
