Canyon Park played host to the Northwest Invitational Science Olympiad this past Saturday, January 23rd.
Nine teams participated in the event visiting from as far away as Corvalis, Oregon. A great day was had by all, as nearly one hundred parents and local volunteers came together to organize this fantastic community event. Far from a "Science Fair", this highly interactive hands-on competition includes serious advance preparation, including engineered devices (planes, cars, catapults, and devices to solve challenges), experimentation, and a variety of research knowledge in topics such as biology, physics, and earth science. It was an amazing day with great supervisors, including local wildlife education director, Kestrel Skyhawk, from SARVEY Wildelife Center and her rescued Golden Eagle.
Canyon Park students rose well to the challenge. Our next stop is the qualifying competition for the state finals. This will be held on February 27th at Seattle CC.

The H1N1 Virus
Click
HERE
for district information on the Virus.
We have increased absenteeism for flu illness. Several elementary schools experienced greater than 10% absent (range of 10-15%) last week as well as a couple of Junior HIgh Schools.
Gel sanitizer is in high demand. Remember that hand washing is still the best option. Emphasis on covering coughs and sneezes should be a priority. Make sure this message is getting to students and staff.
P
ublic health centers have a small supply that is available for people ages 6 months to 25 years who are not insured or low-income AND have health conditions that put them at a higher risk for flu complications.
A list of those centers and their hours are posted on the school district website
www.nsd.org
(centers).
Families with children at risk for flu complications, who have a regular medical provider, should get information from that provider about vaccine availability.

What is RSS?
RSS stands for Rich Site Summary, RDF Site Summary, Really Simple Syndication or all three depending on what you read. Most people just call it RSS. RSS lets you keep up with what's new on your favorite Web sites.
RSS programs use an XML-based format to create a continually updating list of links that you can subscribe to. The list changes whenever the WEB site changes, such as when we update our home page or add stories to a news section.
How can I get RSS feeds?
You can install a news reader (also called an aggregator) to collect and display your RSS feeds on your computer. There are many news readers available, most at no charge. Once you download a news reader, follow its instructions to add feeds. This usually involves clicking on the orange XML button next to the feed you want and copying and pasting the URL from the resulting page into your news reader. Other news readers have an automated process for adding feeds. You may want to experiment with several news readers to find the one you like best.

Our Daily Bulletin page, and our Calendar page have been updated . You can check here for all events pertaining to Canyon Park. There is an RSS feed subscription available, also. You can subscribe to the RSS feed, and receive all updates automatically on an RSS reader application. |

Choir News. This is GOOD!!! |
 |
 |
 |
 |
The Canyon Park Choir has been selected to sing in concert with the professional, Seattle orchestra, Philharmonia Northwest. The choir will be performing the seven-movement Vesperae pro festo Sanctissimae Innocentium by Johann Michael Haydn featuring the full choir as well as student soloists.
The three choirs at Canyon Park have taken first place or received superior ratings at every festival they have attended since the director, Ailisa Newhall, began in 2006. Many of the students take private lessons and are involved in area choirs and musical ensembles outside of school. The Northshore School District has an enormous music program of an extremely high caliber and the Canyon Park Choir would not have reached such a level without the support of the acclaimed music teachers in the district.
Out of the 7 movements there are 5 that have solos on each of 3 parts. Normally, an orchestra would hire 3 professional soloists to sing those parts, but this conductor requested students soloists which means 15 of our kids get the opportunity to have a solo!
Don’t miss this fantastic debut! Get your tickets while they are still available. March 14, 2010 2:30 p.m. St. Stephen's Episcopal Church 4805 NE 45th St., Seattle. For tickets, call 206-675-9727. Tickets also available at the door while they last. General Admission - $18, Students and Seniors - $12. |
