11/15/09 H1N1 Influenza (Swine flu) Updates

Although the national vaccine is supply is still limited, both King and Snohomish counties continue to receive and distribute vaccine.  Most doses are going to private health care providers and hospitals.  Both King and Snohomish counties are providing a small weekly supply of vaccine to local pharmacies starting Nov. 6th. A current list of health care providers and pharmacies who have vaccine are available for King County and Snohomish County . Pharmacies will hold a special clinic or take appointments by phone.  Some locations are only vaccinating certain age groups.  There is administration fee that may be covered by some insurance plans.  The focus remains to vaccinate those identified as more at risk for flu complications.  Check these websites frequently as information and availability continues to change. Families with children at risk for flu complications, who have a regular medical provider, should contact that provider about vaccine availability.  Information is available from the Washington State Department of Health on H1N1 flu illness in children with chronic conditions and special health care needs.  (A download of that document can be found below under "Additional Resources.")   A special hotline is available in King County to assist with questions or concerns in multiple languages. 1-877-903-5464.

11/13/09 Adopt a Stocking-  Each winter the TJH's community service club, TCIA, decorates and fills handmade stockings with gifts donated by Timbercrest students and families for 100 needy teenagers.  These teenagers live in shelters, group homes, or foster care.  Please help fill the stockings (with items like toiletries, Target gift cards, small games, socks, gloves, and hats!)  You can bring your donations to den or room 204 between Nov. 18th and Dec. 8th. Families can also adopt a stocking to fill.  Please email Ms. Peake (speake@nsd.org) if you would like to adopt a stocking.  Thank you for your support!

Homework help is available to students every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:40 to 4:15 in the TJH Library.  Students can meet to work on group projects, have access to computers, get help with homework, make up missed assignments or tests, or just have a quiet place to read. The following is required for students to attend homework help.
  • Sign up in the library before 2:25 the day of attendance
  • No one will be admitted after 2:40 unless prior arrangements have been made or student is sent with a written note from a teacher
  • Be prepared with 1 1/2 hours of homework or a book to read
  • Students cannot leave early or go home with another student unless they have a signed note of permission from a parent or guardian
  • Students may not wait for their ride outside on school grounds unsupervised.  Parents need to pick their students up from the library at 4:15 PM.  Students that walk home will be dismissed at 4:15.
  • Students who are off tasks or being disruptive will be asked to contact a parent or guardian for immediate pick up
  • If a student is asked to leave more than once, their privilege of attending homework help will be suspended

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Bambarger at cbambarger@nsd.org or Ms. Merculief at mmerculief@nsd.org.

A Note from the Principal

You have awesome Kids!  Today was not a typical day at the schoolhouse.  Throughout the morning as we waited for power to be restored, your students moved about their daily schedule as usual.  The students were respectful and well behaved.  As I went from class to class checking in with students and staff, it was evident that the students and staff practiced flexibility and adjusted to the situation at hand.  After all, isn't that what life is about: adjusting to curve balls that get thrown our way.  I do appreciate your patience. Our office staff worked tirelessly this morning answering the many phone calls that came in to ask pertinent and important questions.  All students received lunch.  District maintenance crews checked classrooms to monitor heat levels.  Power was restored around 11:20 AM.  I observed many students learning, collaborating, and enjoying some time connecting with their peers and teachers.  Please let me know if you have questions, and, again, thank you for your continued support.

10/29/09 Opportunities for Gifted and Talented Youth

Every year Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth does a talent search for America's best and brightest. They would like you to consider having your gifted student take the SAT or ACT standardized test. If your student does well they may be able to access summer programs for gifted students. To get more information and to sign up for a test click on the link below:

The Robinson Center at the University of Washington also offers enrichment programs for gifted youth through their Summer Stretch Program. They too require an SAT or ACT score to qualify. These classes take place in the summer at the University of Washington. To learn more about this program click on the link below.

9/23/09 Games at Pop Keeney - It is important that students and parents understand the rules when attending games at Pop Keeney. This is a school district property so all school and district rules apply.  Students not following these rules will be removed from the stadium and may lose the opportunity to attend any more games at Pop Keeney.

6/3/09 Warm Weather Dress Code
We need your help in making sure students make good choices regarding proper school attire.  Shorts and skirts cannot be shorter that finger tips when arms are straight at sides.  Modestly cut tops must completely cover undergarments with straps at least 1 1/2 inch wide.  Pants must be worn at waist with no undergarments showing.  Should your child come to school dressed inappropriately, they will be given clothing to wear from the lost and found.  Thank you for your assistance!

10/27/08  Supervision and Dress Code for JR. High Students Attending Football & Other Sports Games - Jr. High students attending high school sporting events need to follow the same dress code as High School students.  Also, Junior High Students must be supervised by an adult (prefer parent) at the games.  School Rules will apply for uncooperative behavior.  This means, if you don't have a parent or an adult with you when you enter the gate, you will be turned away.
