Online Survey To Provide Feedback on Weekly Teacher Instructional Planning/Collaboration Release Time

Take Online Survey to Provide Feedback -Northshore School District seeks your feedback as it determines a weekly teacher instructional planning and collaboration schedule. An online survey is available between May 8 and 27 to gather input on the preferred time and day of the week for this release time and potential student supervision needs. This survey information will be used to determine the best day/time for release time and to work with community partners in developing a menu of resources for families that many need support for student supervision during weekly release time. The district has historically received a state waiver for five non-student days for school improvement activities and for teacher training, collaboration and instructional planning time. The district is restoring these five non-student days and returning to a 180-day school calendar from the current 175-day school calendar. Northshore is also working to provide this training, instructional planning and collaboration time within the 180-day school calendar by lengthening the school day by 10 minutes and having 2 hours of weekly release time on a regular, consistent basis. Importantly, overall instructional time for students will be maintained at current levels.

Non-student days with weeks or months in between are not adequate for the ongoing needs for instructional planning, collaboration and professional development available from a weekly schedule. Transitioning to a weekly instructional planning and collaboration schedule would provide consistent time for:

• Planning for improved instruction
• Assessing student progress and lesson planning for individual modifications/interventions
• Gathering, discussing and assessing evidence of student growth required by the new teacher evaluation system
• Professional development for new national learning standards, new student assessments, new teacher evaluation system and new curriculum

 School districts across the region such as Bellevue, Issaquah, Lake Washington, Mercer Island, Everett, Mukilteo, Shoreline and Snohomish successfully utilize collaboration schedules, some for many years. 

The district will use this survey information to determine the best day/time for release time and to work with community partners in developing a menu of resources for families that many need support for student supervision during weekly release time. Community SERVE Day - August 24^th, 9AM-1PM - We Need Your Help!

Community SERVE Day brings together people in our community to serve teachers and students of local schools. Once again this summer Frank Love will participate in August's Community SERVE Day. Projects on SERVE Day may include helping teachers set up their classrooms for the fall, small painting projects, spreading bark dust and playground chips, cleaning, and various improvements of school grounds.  This year's goal is to mobilize the community to serve Frank Love Elementary. This includes our fabulous parent community and students! Last year over 1,000 volunteers helped 9 Northshore and 4 Lake Washington schools. Dear Frank Love families:

Enrollment growth in the north end of the district continues to impact ou r school communities. We are developing an interim plan to manage this growth until the district  can implement a longer-term solution through the construction of a new high school and grade reconfiguration, which will require passage of a bond in 2014. 

As part of the interim plan, neighboring elem entary schools have been identified as overflow schools to help accommodate additional enrollment growth. Frank Love Elementary School has been designated to be the overflow school for Canyon Creek and Crystal Springs elementary schools.
