From your Presidents

Greetings Canyon Park families

With the sun shining and trees in bloom, it is hard to not notice that something new is happening everywhere, as we all welcome spring's arrival, at Canyon Park we are looking forward to the many spring events at Canyon Park Jr High.  April brought a much enjoyed staff appreciation lunch of spring salads on April 16th.  May is a busy month with student testing - May 12, 13, 18, & 19th,  staff appreciation week - May 17 - 21, Career Day - Friday, May 21st, and the last general PTSA meeting is May 12th.

In February, we had a good turnout for the internet safety night.  About half of the parents brought their kids along, and everyone came away with new knowledge about media and internet safety and tools to deal with the on-going concerns and dangers that we face with our students.  We are planning to bring the speaker back next year, with both a student assembly and a parent night, because we believe it's such an important topic for everyone.

In March, the PTSA hosted the reception for History Day exhibits, and we'd like to thank Mary Inghram for volunteering to chair that event.  The teachers were also treated to a staff appreciation lunch of a potato bar and Irish themed treats.  As always, the teachers loved the event and we would like to thank the staff appreciation chairs (Adrienne Gwinn, Katena Gunn, and Joanna Lowell-Forker) for their volunteer efforts every month to make our teachers feel so special.

We want to thank you for voting in the last election for the Northshore School District levies and bonds.  The passing of these measures will go a long way in helping to balance the budget.  Unfortunately, the district may still have to make some painful cuts to the budget this spring.  Hopefully, you were able to be part of one of the conversations with the school board, attended one of the three budget workshops, or took the on-line survey.  The board will make decisions based on your input on April 27th.  Check the NSD website for updates at www.nsd.org .

Spring brings new excitement to the campus with 6th grade parents having been to campus to see what it will be like for their students next year and 9th graders looking forward to their transition to High School.  It's so fun to watch these students grow and change.  We are getting as excited for next year as the kids are.

Enjoy these days of sunshine, rain, and flowers!  Spring is here!

Update your child's ethnic and race information by May 11
The federal and state government changed the reporting categories for student ethnic and race data, and the district must have updated information on file before next school year.  A letter and form was mailed to families asking you to fill out the form and return it to your child's school by May 11. Help us meet these requirements by completing this form and returning it as soon as possible. For more information on these requirements, click here www.nsd.org/ethnicracedata

Recently, the federal government and our state updated the reporting categories for student ethnic and race data, and we must have updated information on file for every student before next school year begins.

We need your help in completing this task. A letter along with the form was mailed to families on April 2 for each student. Please fill out this form and return it back to us as soon as possible, so we can update your child's information. The forms must be returned by May 11th so we can get the information entered into the system.

If you choose not to update your child's information, the district will be forced to use observation information to update your child's information. We want to be as accurate as possible, and the only way to do that is to have you fill out the information.

Additional forms are available from the main office or online.  School staff may not advise you on how to fill out the form, but we can help provide additional information and answer questions.

KNIGHT'S DAY

May 17th, 12:30-2:30

Knight's day is an end of the year carnival to celebrate the completion of another great year of student success and achievement.  This Canyon Park tradition is a great event for parents to come to help make snow cones, supervise inflatables, create cotton candy, and more, all while enjoying great music and a fun, unforgettable time with all of our Canyon Park Students.

If you would like to help for an hour or the whole time during Knight's Day, contact Maria Byers at 206-799-256 or maria.byers@verizon.net, or Kim Davis at (425) 486-9320 or kimberlymdavis@verizon.net
