This week I turned the page on my calendar to be greeted by the wintery blast of early March. To me March in the Northwest is a perfect metaphor for the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Just like March, junior high students oscillate between snow, rain, sunshine, storm clouds and balmy days. Those of us that have the privilege to work with them on a daily basis get the gratification of being the calming force in their school day. It is important for us to help them navigate the ups and downs of their emotional changes and teach them how to decide which battles to fight and which ones to walk away from. Several studies have shown that the personalities and coping strategies we learn by the end of junior high are the strategies we will rely on for the rest of our life. Does that mean we all behave like junior high students?
Unlike the teenage years, March has a predetermined and definitive end. For Leota, the month of March will be a time to make plans for next year. On March 5, Woodinville High School will come to the Leota gym at 6:30 pm to share information on their AP programs. After attending this night, you should be better prepared to make decisions about the path you should choose for high school and beyond. Next week, we will be sending letters home to all current 7th graders and their families outlining the process for informed self-select. We are providing information on your 7th grader's scores on a variety of assessments and grades earned from first semester. The hope is that this information will help you with your upcoming registration decisions.
Track Coach Needed at Leota: Time is running out, HELP!
Leota needs a track coach for the spring. A Stipend is paid for this position. The season runs from April 2nd to May 23rd. Practices run from 2:30-4:30. Please contact Jacob Hendrickson at

Advanced Placement (AP) and College in the High School Information Night

When: Monday, March 5, 6:30 - 7: 45 p.m.
Where: LJH Gym
This evening provides an opportunity for parents and students to learn and gather information about the AP program and college credit classes that are offered at WHS. Currently, there are 20 AP course offerings within English, math, science, social studies, business and world languages departments. AP courses are the most rigorous courses available and provide a unique learning experience for those who want to achieve at the highest level. Through AP's college-level courses your student will:

Be better prepared for college

Can earn college credit while enrolled at Woodinville High School
·
Stand out in the admissions process
·
Lay a foundation for future academic success by developing the analytical and study skills required to succeed and prosper in college courses
This commitment includes time management, hard work, and academic maturity. Students are strongly encouraged to take the AP Exams in May to validate their work during the school year.
The work is challenging, but the rewards are great and students can take pride in a nationally recognized achievement and find themselves better prepared to continue their post-secondary education.

Honor Society News
The next Honor Society meeting will be next Wednesday, March 7
th during Pride time. This meeting will be held in the school theatre and is open to all students who have met the requirements for membership. The 9th grade officer candidates will be giving speeches and the membership will vote. There is still openings for students who want to run for office. Please see Ms. McCord for further information.
