Elective Course Descriptions
Team Sports Class – PE credit. Learn about team sports, sportsmanship and fitness.
Weight Training - PE credit. This class will be a mixture of free weights & machines with a bit of cardio. The goal overall will be for body toning and strength building. Beginning or advanced weight lifters welcome. There is an optional yoga/aerobics training. We have a good library of both yoga and aerobic DVDs that you can choose to workout to during weight class. Both boys and girls are in this class.
Yoga Class – PE credit. The Yoga class will be comprised of stretching, strength postures, and other low impact exercises.
Reading/Writing Prep Class – English credit. This course is designed for students who need additional skills passing the HSPE. Skills are individually targeted to each student’s needs.☺
A.P. Psychology- Occupational Ed credit/Career and Technical Ed. What has more impact on who humans are? Nature or nurture? Discover what makes us “tick.” Students will gain insight into how we learn, what affects our memory, and the relationship between motivation and work. Other topics include emotion, stress and health, psychological disorders, personality, and social psychology. Students use a college-level textbook. Recommended for students with college plans or those simply interested in psychological issues.
Yearbook Staff – Occupational Ed credit. Work with technology to produce the SAS yearbook. Write stories and captions, design page layouts, and take pictures.
Foods for a Lifetime – Occupational Ed credit/Career and Technical Ed.
Prepare recipes for healthy living in labs with classmates. Incorporate “green” concepts into your diet by learning how to prepare meals using the freshest, seasonal ingredients. Study kitchen safety, cooking principles, sanitation, international cuisine, culinary-related careers and meal planning. This class develops skills that last a lifetime!
STEM Class (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) – Occupational Ed credit/ /Career and Technical Ed.
Produce products make of wood. Learn about safety and utilizing tools. Students will work in teams to design and build projects to accomplish a specific task such as towers, bridges and catapults.
SAS Newspaper Staff – Occupational Ed credit. Be a part of the SAS newspaper! Activities include: writing, editing, interviewing and work on the SAS website. Students should be interested in writing and love technology.
Drawing, Painting and Design Class – Fine Arts credit.
Learn new drawing skills and stretch your imagination by creating drawings with a variety of materials, expressive, colorful paintings and designs using all the art elements. All levels welcome.
3-D Design - Fine Arts credit. Create unique three-dimensional artwork using paper mache’, clay, glass and more! A great opportunity to make functional and aesthetic art pieces.
Teacher Assistant – Other/Elective credit. Work for a teacher to assist with paperwork, projects and tasks. When there is little work to complete for teacher do your homework or read a book.
Peer Tutor- Other/Elective credit. Chance to work with students with disabilities or struggling learners.
Study Hall Class – Other/Elective credit. A daily opportunity to finish your homework and receive help on assignments for all of your classes.
Performance Media Class – Other/Elective credit.
Experiment with and learn to use iMovie, Garageband, and PowerPoint to create fun videos and slideshows to display at assemblies and in homerooms. We may use a mixture of video production, multi media, public speaking, and performance. You can choose to be in front of a crowd or behind a camera.
Culture Class - English credit.
This class explores different cultures through a variety of mediums including films, short stories, poetry, and art. We decide as a class which cultures we want to study.
