Dear Kokanee Friends and Families,

Last week, as I raked the thousands of leaves from the neighbor's hazelnut trees that found their way into our yard, I paused to take in my surroundings. The vegetable garden was turning brown and the ground was littered with over-ripened grape tomatoes. The flowers in the pots were shriveling up and the even the sun-drenched scarecrows looked a little pale and sad. I will miss summer.

As we transition into a new season, I cannot help but contrast the changes of fall to the abundant growth we are enjoying at school. After a year at Kokanee, I was fortunate enough to spend September observing and working with many students who have made huge gains as scholars and citizens. Reading levels are increasing, math facts are being mastered, stories are including interesting transitions, conflicts are resolved with words, and frustrations are controlled with well-chosen strategies. I, along with the staff, continue to grow in our knowledge and skills as well.

Thank you for your support and partnership through which we can ensure that our students maximize their growth and
learning each day at school. The crucial growth we

observe may not be tangible or quantifiable by a test. For example, this month we have a giving project called Sister School along with Cultural Night on the 23rd that will help your child grow in their understanding and appreciation of different cultures and the joys of service. Regardless of the speed, shape and size of growth, we celebrate the refreshing nature of growth and learning we see at Kokanee everyday. I encourage you to find time everyday to celebrate with your child. It's always the right season to celebrate growth.

Growing and Learning With You,

Kosal Chea
Principal

PS. If you haven't done so already, please support our learning community by simply joining the PTA. We also challenge you to Give Five, five hours of volunteer time to our school. These two small gestures will deliver huge impacts. Thank you!
