Kenmore Junior High Varsity Athletes earned District titles in 10of 14 varsity sports during the 2009-2010sports seasons.  The Colts won titles in: Boys and Girls Cross Country,Football, Volleyball, Boys & Girls Basketball, Boys Soccer, GirlsTennis and Boys and Girls Track & Field.

Northshore Junior High Students Win King County Contest


Sydni Heaton and Meagan Rigby, Northshore JH ninth graders, took first place in the 6-12 grade category in the Puget Sound Starts Here Art and Video Contestsponsored by Puget Sound Starts Here and Naturevision.org.  Their videowas designed to answer the question, "Why should we care about PugetSound?"  As a public service announcement, the video uses art to bringawareness to the need for conservation and protection of Puget Sound asan ecosystem and a natural environment that profoundly shoulders theburden of modern use. The students' work was featured at a galaSaturday, June 5, at Westlake Center. Their work will be posted onYouTube and travel around the county to different sites as part of acollection of other works. (posted 6/7/10) 



Two Woodinville High Students First Place Finishers at Track & Field Championship

Two Woodinville High School students took first place in separate events at the 2010 Washington Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 4A State Championships.  Curtis Flolid placed first in the Boys Pole Vault and Anthony Nguyen placed first in the 100 Meters

Cottage Lake Elementary Participates in Mariners-Nikon Social Responsibility Program

Cottage Lake Elementary was selected to participate in theMariners-Nikon Social Responsibility Program.  In partnership with theSeattle Mariners, Nikon provided Cottage Lake with specialopportunities to enjoy baseball at the ballpark and donated five new,digital COOLPIX L20 cameras to the school.

Secondary Academy for Success (SAS) Earns Earth Heroes Award

Secondary Academy for Success (SAS) earned an Earth Heroes at School award.  The Earth Heroes at School Program celebrates King County students, teachers, staff and volunteers who implement projects at their school or beyond to protect our environment.

Since 2006, Secondary Academy for Success students have been involvedwith the school's recycling program as well as service projects at 21Acres, an agricultural and environmental learning center inWoodinville.  The successful recycling program has tripled the amountof recyclable materials previously collected.  For their work at 21Acres, students participate in activities such as trail and pondmaintenance, organic gardening, and clearing weeds without the use oftoxic substances.  These activities  have helped students increasetheir knowledge of environmental issues and build awareness of theirecological footprint.

Northshore Students Shine at State History Day Competition

Northshore High Schools Place First and Fourth at DECA Competition

The Inglemoor High School DECA team placed first and theWoodinville High School DECA team placed fourth at the DECA 64th AnnualInternational Career and Development Conference held April 22-28 inLouisville, KY.

More than 13,000 high school marketing and DECA students from theUnited States, Canada, Germany, Puerto Rico and Guam competed in theinternational competition.  The six-day conference ended with the GrandAwards ceremony where recognition was given to the top ten winners ineach of the 35 competition events.  For a list of the Inglemoor andWoodinville students, please click here.

Timbercrest Student Selected as World Affairs Council Essay Winner

Anna Bjarvin's essay, Addressing World Issues:  Brazil Deforestation wasawarded second place in the grades 9-12 division of the World AffairsCouncil's 2010 World Citizen Essay contest.  Over 400 students statewide submitted essays.  Award winners will be honored at a specialreception May 17, at the University of Washington.

This was the 12th annual essay contest hosted by the World AffairsCouncil in Seattle.  The goal of the contest is to promote discussionamong students, teachers, families and community members about the waysindividuals can effect positive change in our global community.  (posted 5/12/10)

 

Two Timbercrest Students Earn Eagle Scout Rank

Two Timbercrest Junior High students, Zack Powell and Spencer Read, received their Eagle Scout rank, the highest rank possible.  Only two percent of all Boy Scouts advance to an Eagle Scout.  Zack and Spencer each completed their Eagle rank requirements, including 21 merit badges and a culminating service project by February and April 2010.  Zach chose to lead a team that conducted a successful clothing drive for Seattle's Treehouse, a nonprofit organization benefiting foster kids, while Spencer chose to lead a team building a 100-foot long retaining wall in the Woodinville Cemetery.  Congratulations, Zack and Spencer!  (posted 5/3/10)


Bothell High School State Solo Winners

Bothell High School had great success at this year's Washington Music Educators Association State Solo and Ensemble contest in Ellensburg in April.  Bothell High sent a total of 32 students to the state competition this year and came away with two first place winners.  Abishek Kalkura won the Tenor Sax Division and Tim Pizzichemi won the Cello Division.  Congratulations, Bothell High!  (posted 5/3/10)


Northshore Teams Place Well at Science Olympiad

The Science Olympiad teams from Northshore Junior High, Canyon Park Junior High and Bothell High all placed well in the Science Olympiad competitions.  The Northshore Junior High team placed 1st in the Regional competition held in March and placed 3rd at the State competition in April.  Canyon Park Junior High teams placed 2nd and 3rd at the Regional competition and 2nd at the State competition.  Bothell High also placed 2nd at the State competition.  Congratulations to the teams!  (posted 4/26/10)

Shelton View Student Takes First Place at Math Championship
 
Edward Yang, fifth grade student at Shelton View Elementary, tookfirst place in the individual competition at the Washington State MathChampionship held in Blaine, Washington on April 17. 

Participants in grades 5-8 are tested in the areas of probability,algebra, mental math, geometry and potpourri.  They take a lengthyindividual test and then work as a team to answer questions.  Edwardwas one of more than 400 students who competed in the individualcompetition and had the top score of 29 out of 30 problems. Congratulations, Edward!  (posted 4/26/10)



Five Inglemoor High School Students Win Awards at National Journalism Competition

Inglemoor High School students competed against 1,073 students from across the nation in journalism at the National Journalism Competition held in Portland, Oregon.  Five of Inglemoor's nine competitors earned awards:  Amy Sisk, Superior, News; Nick Peasley, Excellent for Commentary; Ellie Tanaka, Honorable Mention, Editorial; Nick Defiesta, Honorable Mention, Feature; and Charlotte Ziob, Honorable Mention, A&E Review.  (posted 4/26/10)



Woodinville High School Model United Nations Delegation Earns Awards

Woodinville High Students Compete at FBLA Conference

28 Woodinville High students, along with Woodinville teacher Thomas Rockwood and FLBA advisor Morgan Purvis, attended the Washington State Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Business Leadership Conference (SBLC) in Yakima on April 8-10.  Woodinville students competed in over 35 events and earned 39 top-five finishes, including first-place awards in 11 events.  14 students qualified to move on to national-level competition.  In addition, Woodinville FBLA earned the Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit.  This award is applied for by the chapter and requires proof of community service projects, community involvement, a business report and several other items.  (posted 4/19/10)


Northshore DECA Students Shine at State Competition

77 Northshore students earned invitations to the International Career and Development Conference (ICDC) to be held in Louisville, Ky., April 22-28. On March 5, 178 Northshore high school students competed against 3,000 students from 120 state schools for 274 invitations to ICDC. Distributive Educational Clubs of America (DECA) provides high school students with hands-on experiences in the fields of marketing, business and entrepreneurship. Northshore Students Excel at the North Puget Sound Regional History Day Competition

The North Puget Sound Regional History Day competition was held Friday, March 19.  It was the largest contest in the region's history. Bill Boniface, Dori Wuepper,  Tom Peterson, Jerrie Drinkwine, Patti Kalinski, and Paula Cautrell coached students from Northshore Jr. High, Canyon Park Jr. High, Kenmore Jr. High, Leota Jr. High, Timbercrest Jr. High, Sunrise Elementary and Bear Creek Elementary.  Northshore students won several special awards and were well represented as finalists.  23 out of 38 projects moving on to the state competition in the Junior Division (grades 6-8) were those of Northshore students.  (posted 3/24/10)


Woodinville High Student Selected to Compete in German Language Olympics

Woodinville High School student Michael Crawford is one of two winners in the United States selected to compete in the German Language Olympics this summer in Hamburg, Germany.  The Goethe-Institute Chicago selected the finalists for the International German Olympics from the 13 best US candidates in a field of 45,000 during a national contest in 2009.  The winners in Hamburg will receive a three week language course in Berlin.  Good luck, Michael!  (posted 3/2/10)


Woodinville High School Honor Society Organizes Toiletry Drive

The Woodinville High School Honor Society organized a toiletry drive that collected over 1,500 toiletry items.  Kayvon Behroozian, Ashley Chinn and Maddy Young organized the drive under the direction of co-presidents Tarra Theisen and MIchael Jensen and teacher advisor, Adam O'Hair.  The collected items will be donated to the Sacred Heart Shelter in Seattle, which provides safe shelter to homeless families, especially women and children.  (posted 3/1/10)


Twenty Northshore Students Among National Merit Scholarship Finalists

Twenty students from the Northshore School District were named as National Merit Scholarship Finalists.  These students are among the top scorers nationwide on the SAT and are eligible for scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Program.  High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.  Listed below are the students from the Northshore School District:

Canyon Park Junior High Symphonic Choir Selected to Sing with Seattle Philharmonica Northwest

The 70-voice Symphonic Choir from Canyon Park Junior High has been selected to sing in concert with the professional Seattle orchestra, Philharmonica Northwest.  The choir, as well as student soloists, will be performing the seven-movement Vesperae pro festo Sanctissimae Innocentium by Johann Michael Haydn.  The three choirs at Canyon Park have taken first place or received superior ratings at every festival they have attended since the director, Ailisa Newhall, began in 2006.  (posted 2/24/10)


Skyview Junior High Hosts Soles for Haiti Shoe Drive

The Skyview Junior High School ASB hosted a Soles for Haiti shoe drive.  Skyview students collected and donated over 540 pairs of shoes to help the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti.  ASB officers worked diligently creating posters and fliers which were displayed around the school and collecting and boxing the hundreds of new and gently used shoes.  The shoes will be distributed to the Haitian people.  (posted 2/16/10)



Bothell High Beginning Leadership Class Raises Funds to Fight Against Breast Cancer

Bothell High School teacher, Valerie Spagnolo's Beginning Leadership Class held a Paws for the Cause Breast Cancer Run/Walk.  They raised several thousand dollars for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the non-profit organization

Sunrise Elementary Students Warm Hearts and Bodies at Children's Hospital

During their Snuggle Bug Blanket Drive, Sunrise Elementary students and PTA members collected polar fleece and held blanket-tying events to make over 50 cute, colorful and cuddly blankets.  The blankets will be donated to Children's Hospital.  The hospital gives the blankets to patients to provide comfort during their hospital stay.  The children get to take their blankets home to keep when they leave the hospital.  (posted 2/3/10)


Bothell High Student Earns Gold Medal at Jr. Nationals

Bothell High School student Derrick McLean won a gold medal in curling at the USA Curling Junior National Championships held in Minnesota the last week of January 2010.  Derrick is a member on one of ten teams in the world that will be competing at the World Junior Curling Championships held in Switzerland in March.  Good luck, Derrick! Canyon Park Junior High Hosts Northwest Invitational Science Olympiad

Canyon Park Junior High in Bothell hosted the Northwest Invitational Science Olympiad on Saturday, January 23.  Nine teams visiting from as far away as Corvalis, Oregon, participated in the event.  The highly interactive hands-on competition requires advance preparation, including engineered devices, such as planes, cars, catapults, and devices to solve challenges; experimentation; and a variety of research knowledge in topics such as biology, physics and earth science.  Canyon Park had many first, second and third place winners.  Their next stop will be the qualifying competition on February 27 for the state finals.  (posted 1/28/10)

Nathan's Winning Logo



Inglemoor High School senior Nathan Cho's logo was chosen as the winning entry for the Washington Network for Innovative Careers (WaNIC) logo contest. "Nathan's logo will be used in all of WaNIC's collateral material," states WaNIC Director Pam Darling, "including a new website, business cards and letterhead, promotional materials, and the state skills center website.  We are very happy with his design!"

WaNIC is a cooperative of seven school districts in NE King County. Member districts include Bellevue, Issaquah, Lake Washington, Mercer Island, Northshore, Riverview and Snoqualmie Valley. WaNIC was established to provide advanced-level Career & Technical Education programs that prepare students for post-secondary education and successful entry into high-skill, high-demand careers.  (posted 12/21/09)


Kenmore Junior High FIRST Lego League Team Wins Awards


The Kenmore Junior High FLL (FIRST Lego League) Team under the direction of Technology Education teacher Kevin Lane, won two awards at the Dec. 5 Regional competition at Lynnwood High and advanced to the Dec. 12 State competition at Bellevue High.  They won the Rising Star Award - this award is given by judges to honor a team that shows strong skills across the board, as well as First Place in Robot Performance - Kenmore's "Papa Wheelie" robot received 340 points out of a possible 400 points. The next highest score was 280 points.

Mr. Lane also attributes the team's success to the endless volunteer hours that Mrs. Vandivort, Mr. Lettic and Mrs. Godfrey donated to work with the team. Inglemoor Student Selected for Reischauer Scholars Program

Michaella Rosner, Inglemoor High School junior, was recently selected as one of the 25 exceptional high school juniors and seniors from across the United States to participate in the Reischauer Scholars Program.  The program is a distance learning course sponsored by the Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.  The scholars are provided with a broad overview of Japanese history, literature, religion, art, politics, economics, and contemporary society, with a special focus on the U.S.-Japan relationship.  Students who successfully complete the course will earn Stanford Continuing Studies Program credit and a certificate of completion.  (posted 12/11/09) 


Hollywood Hills Elementary Choir Receives "People's Choice" Award

HollywoodHills Elementary Choir and their choir director, Serene Robeson, wereawarded the Choirfest's "People's Choice" award. The Choirfest, part of the 2009 Woodinville Light Festival held on December 4, invited school choirs, community choirs, church groups, and neighborhoodcarolers to share their seasonal songs with the communityat the Light Festival.  (posted 12/8/09)


Skyview Student Selected as Honoree in Seattle's Jingle Bell Run and Walk

HannahGordon, current 9th grade student at Skyview Junior High in Bothell,has been chosen as one of this year's honorees for the 25th AnnualSeattle Jingle Bell Run and Walk to be held on December 13, 2009. Hannah will be an ambassador for helping to raise awareness and fundsfor research into arthritis.  At the beginning of 7th grade, Hannah wasdiagnosed with enthesitis, a type of juvenile arthritis.

Woodinville High School FBLA Hunger Busters a Huge Success

Woodinville High School's Future Business Leaders of America organization successfully pulled off another Hunger Busters community service event this year. On Halloween night, around 30 FBLA volunteers suited up in their costumes and spent the evening trick-or-treating for canned food to donate to Hopelink. Nearly 1000 pounds of canned food were collected in a little over 2 hours!

Woodinville High School Orchestra Selected to Perform at Conference

The Woodinville High School Orchestra has been selected to perform for the Washington Music Educators Association biennial conference in Yakima, Washington in February 2010.  To be selected to perform at a WMEA State conference is the highest honor that can be bestowed on any musical ensemble in the school setting. The WHS students represent the highest caliber of high school musicians in our region. Ensembles are only invited to perform when they represent the highest possible standard of musical excellence and achievement. 
Invitation to perform at this conference is by audition only.

Director Eric Lucas and his students will perform for music educators from across the state attending this conference. They will demonstrate to the many attendees what can be achieved in orchestral performance when correct student motivation and teaching strategies are implemented. (10/15/09)


Northshore High School Students Recognized as 2010 National Merit Program Commended Students
