Assemblies
Assemblies are scheduled throughout the year to provide cultural enrichment and opportunities for student performance. A committee of staff and parents selects the assemblies.

Camp Casey
This program is an outdoor educational program for fifth grade students. It is held at Camp Casey on Whidbey Island and is an extension of the science curriculum taught in fifth grade. It usually takes place in May, either Monday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Friday. Transportation is provided by the district, and cooking is done on site by district personnel and volunteer parents. Volunteer parents also act as group counselors. Teachers and other school personnel run the sessions and classes while at camp. There is a fee to cover food and lodging costs of participating students. This information, along with permission forms, is sent home prior to the trip.

Music education
As a part of the general education curriculum, students in grades 1-6 and all-day kindergarten meet with the music teacher. The comprehensive program is designed to identify, encourage, and develop students’ musical abilities and help students understand and appreciate this form of the arts. Evening musical performances are scheduled periodically during the year, and all students are encouraged to participate in the performances.

Physical education
All students in grades K-6 have physical education taught by a P.E. specialist. If your child has a medical problem, please inform us of necessary modifications. A note from home is necessary to excuse a child from participation. Students are also expected to be dressed in a manner that makes participation possible. Since the time with the P.E. specialist is limited, progress in this area can only be made through regular participation in the activities.

Student Council The student council is an organization that works to foster positive leadership, student involvement in decision making, and school pride. Experiences in student government are a valuable part of learning to live in our democratic society. The council plans student activities, raises funds for the benefit of all the students, and works with the entire student body and with teachers to bring about better relations in our school. The student council consists of an elected president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer, along with classroom representatives.

Cross Country
This voluntary program is offered in the fall for students in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6. Practicing is done during recess times. Approximately four cross country meets with other schools take place after school, some at Kenmore Elementary and some at neighboring schools. A final “all district meet” is held at the end of the regular season. The program is fun and rewarding and allows every ability level to participate. Boys compete against boys, girls against girls, and grade level competes against the same grade level to keep the competition at appropriate levels.

"Brown Bag" Enrichment Classes
Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of after school enrichment classes during the months of February through May. Examples of classes include beginning Spanish, technology, gardening, drawing, chess, and photography. The name “Brown Bag” comes from the fact that students bring an after school snack to the class.
Instrumental music.

Beginning and Intermediate Band and Orchestra
Offered to students in grades 5 and 6. These classes are held before school at Kenmore Junior High. Students ride the junior high buses to band and are then transported back by bus to Kenmore Elementary. There is no charge for this program, but students must provide their own instruments. Information regarding dates and times is sent home at the beginning of the school year or can be obtained by contacting Kenmore Junior High, 489-6211.

Intramurals
Intramural programs are offered throughout the year and are designed to allow for all ability levels to participate, receive instruction, and play low-level competition. Girls’ basketball is offered after school during October and November, and boys’ basketball takes place during December and January. In February and March, co-educational volleyball and floor hockey are featured. During March and April, additional activities are scheduled. The emphasis of the intramural programs is on participation, learning skills, and having fun!

Kenmore Performing Arts Company (KPAC)
Fifth and sixth grade students wishing to extend their vocal music development may also wish to join this group. This is a performance based group which meets after school and performs two to three times during the year.

Math Olympiad
Intermediate students interested in fun and challenging math opportunities may participate in Math Olympiad.

PTA-sponsored activities
PTA sponsors a number of enjoyable and enriching activities. PTA family nights are scheduled throughout the year, and speakers on topics of interest to parents are also included. Watch for information about these events in Paw Prints and Bear Facts.

School service opportunities
A number of school service groups are available to students. It is our hope that involvement in these groups will encourage students to take pride in our school and to help set high standards and personal expectations for our student body. Examples of student support groups are safety patrol, computer helpers, library helpers, stage crew, and cook’s assistants.

Track
Track is offered to third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students during the spring months. There are three to four meets between neighboring schools. Practices take during the noon recess. A final “Junior Olympics” meet, which brings together all of the elementary schools on the west side of the district, is held as the culminating event.

Involvement in all after school programs is dependent upon students maintaining grades commensurate with their ability and appropriate citizenship.
