Answers
1)  Q Which students qualify for special education?
A
Students qualify for special education if they have an identifiable handicapping condition that has a significant negative impact on education. Your school psychologist can help you determine if there are areas of suspected disability.
2)  Q My student is unmotivated and disorganized. Can special education help?
A
Many students struggle with organization and motivation. The junior high years are often a period in which students learn these habits through a process of trial and error. Only those students who have a documented handicapping condition that is the cause of their limited attention, concentration or organization are considered for special education services.
3)  Q Can a student who is struggling with second language issues qualify for special education?
A
Although there are some instances in which students with limited English proficiency are qualified for special education, the assessment for special education must determine that limited English is the not the primary reason for the academic delay.
4)  Q What services are provided to special education students?
A
Special education students have a yearly Individualized Education Plan that specifies the areas of disability and the specially designed instruction for each student. Students are not categorized based on handicapping condition, but rather, their needs are addressed individually. Goal areas can address academic, social and behavioral needs.
