The requirements for graduation in the Northshore School District,
beginning with the class of 2008, includes a Culminating Project, to be completed by
their senior year.
It is possible for students to make music a part of this requirements I have listed some potential ideas that students
can use and would be willing to assist as I can. If you have ideas
that are not listed here, let me know and I will look at adding them.
For detailed information on the graduation requirements, see your
counselor, Mrs. Hansen in the Career Center or go the NSD home page
link below. | |

1) |
Q |
Produce a concert |
 |
A |
Organize a concert, produce it and run it. It could
be one stand alone event or a series of one
hour performances at local senior centers and retirement homes. For example, several years ago a couple of seniors
at Bothell High School wanted to produce a jazz concert. They contacted
the BHS, WHS and IHS directors and asked if they would play at the
concert. They organized everything, such as securing a facility, making
sure that all needed equipment was available, promotions, etc., so that
when the bands showed up, they just had to play. This senior project
turned into the Northshore All-District Jazz Concert, which has run
every year since then! |

2) |
Q |
Senior Recital |
 |
A |
Any of our musicians can rehearse and put on their own senior recital.
The student should do 30-60 minutes of music. This could also be a recital
for a couple of students working together. The student(s) would select
and rehearse their music, secure a location for the performance and
promote the concert. Your paper would either be a reflective paper on the process and the performance, or could be a research paper on the composers and repertoire you have prepared. |

3) |
Q |
Music industry internship |
 |
A |
A student could look
at most any part of the music industry and find a way to do an
internship. This could include a recording studio, a sound design and
reinforcement company, a retail store with an emphasis on business
management, a radio station, etc. |
|

 |
4) |
Q |
Write a music composition |
 |
A |
A student who is interested in composing could write their own song.
This could be for any format (vocal, solo instrument, large ensemble,
etc). You would need to learn the appropriate theory and composition
skills and also should plan on learning to use a music notation software
program such as Print Music, Finale or Sibelius. You would want to find
somebody in the area who writes music that can mentor you in this.

5) |
Q |
Create and produce a music video |
 |
A |
A student could design, direct, produce and edit their own music video.
This would require the necessary equipment (camera, computer, etc) and
software (video editing).

6) |
Q |
Learn how to conduct |
 |
A |
A student who thinks they are interested in becoming a
teacher/conductor in the future could make this a Culminating Project.
They would need to coordinate this with me. They should take conducting
lessons, study conducting, study some of the great conductors and then
rehearse a group and conduct a performance. The student could conduct a
performance of a WHS ensemble at a WHS concert. Note, this would
require approval by me and would be addressed on a case by case basis
and only if it can be worked into the existing WHS ensemble concert
schedule. Beware! This may cause life changing decisions. I did this my senior year and look what happened to me! :)

7) |
Q |
Produce a concert for charity |
 |
A |
Find a worthy cause you want to raise money for and produce a concert.
This could be a concert with several bands playing, it could be a
battle of the bands...who knows. Be creative! |
|

 |
8) |
Q |
Build an instrument |
 |
A |
While many instruments may be difficult to build, a guitar student
could build their own electric guitar (six string or bass). Instructions and kits are
available to help with this process.
