Message from Superintendent Francois Dear Northshore Colleagues, Next week is Spring Break! I wish you all a relaxing and restful week and hope that you will return rejuvenated and inspired as we head into the last two months of the school year.
Next week is also Volunteer Appreciation Week. On behalf of our entire school district, I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who donate countless hours of their time, energy and talents. We have one of the best school districts in the state because our community supports a world class public education. Our volunteers are a critical part of that support.
Whether it is helping students in the classroom, assisting in the office, mentoring a student, raising funds or serving on a committee, our many volunteers positively contribute every day to the success of our students. What I find so inspiring is the number of volunteers who no longer have children in our schools, yet continue to help out and give back. You just don't find that kind of dedication and investment in most places. That's what makes Northshore such a special place.
I hope you will join me this week in thanking the volunteers who make your particular school community a better place.Best wishes for a safe Spring Break. Truly, Larry Francois, Superintendent

National Library Week April 8-14 April 8-14 is National Library Week. The school library is a central learning hub of the school. Northshore's libraries support learning by teaching students how to find reliable information, think critically, make informed decisions, work productively with others, use the Internet safely and ethically, and communicate ideas effectively. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country. This year's theme is "You Belong @ Your Library." Thank you to Northshore's librarians for their work to support students. Click here to view Superintendent Francois' video on National Library Week.

SEPAC Presentation, Teens: What is Normal, April 25 The Special Education Parent/Professional Advisory Council (SEPAC) is hosting the presentation "Teens: What is Normal" on April 25, Administrative Center Board Room, 7-9 p.m. No childcare available. Being a teen is difficult. Being the parent of a teen is difficult. For a parent of, or a teenager with, developmental, neurological, emotional or learning challenges, however, these years can be downright hard, frustrating and confusing! What is "normal" adolescent behavior anyway? When should one worry? How is a parent or student supposed to figure this out? Explore these questions with experts who deal with these conundrums every day! Tricia King & Lisa Kieffer (Northshore Mental Health Specialists) will discuss the tasks and stages of typical adolescent development, explain how those tasks and stages can be made more complex for teens who also face developmental, neurological, emotional and learning challenges, and provide some strategies and resources on how to cope. download flier

Flu Season Arrives The seasonal flu has made a late arrival this year. Northshore schools are seeing higher numbers of absenteeism for influenza-like illness; fever, sore throat, body aches, cough and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea. Please click here to review the information on when to stay home from school. Public Health officials still recommend getting a flu vaccination for all persons ages 6 months and older. Some children need two doses depending on their age. Pertussis or "whooping cough" is also occurring in our area, especially in Snohomish County. For more information on seasonal flu, pertussis and where to get vaccinated, click here. |

A New Approach to Principal Preparation UW Bothell is now accepting applications for its Master's program, Leadership Development for Educators Program (LEDE), for autumn quarter 2012. LEDE is designed for teachers who work as instructional leaders in either formal or informal roles, and provides a pathway from teacher leadership into the principalship. Founded on an understanding that principals succeed by leading supports for teaching and learning, the first part of the program helps teachers advance their skills for leading instruction and includes a job-embedded internship. The second part builds expertise for school-wide leadership expertise through academic and practical experiences. This two-part design ensures a strong connection between program requirements and the everyday needs of schools. This program combines both a Master's degree and the Washington State Principal Certification. The application deadline for autumn quarter 2012 is Aug. 3. For more information on the LEDE Program, go to http://www.washington.edu/news/archive/uweek/61240 or to the program's Web site at http://www.uwb.edu/education/lede. Questions? Please contact Nick Brownlee at nbrownlee@uwb.edu or 425.352.5369.
